Heart Worm For the pills against heart worm are those prescribed a doctor or can we buy them elsewhere? |
I think it has to be perscribed and also I think they have to run a heart worm test on them before giving them the meds. |
are pretty much everyones dogs on them? I mean the vet did not make it sound like I had to do.. of course I will do it if my baby is at risk.. but is he? |
Anywhere that you can find mosquitoes - animals should be on heart worm medicine. They do have to be tested prior to starting the medication because it works to prevent the worms not destroy them. Our Blk Lab, Lucky, wasn't on meds one year and he did get them! He was already on phenobarbital (?) for seizures so our Vet had to confer with Dr's at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to make sure he could withstand the treatment for heartworms - which is terrible especially when we can prevent it. They have to have 2 treatments to make sure that they've killed the larva (or whatever they call them). I believe they run some kind of poison thru their system to kill of the adult worms and then again for the eggs or newborn worms... :( Anyway we almost lost Lucky but Thank God, he survived and lived another 10+ yrs. Maybe they have perfected the treatment by now but it's certainly something I would do (in any case) to prevent my baby from having to go through any treatment that's preventable. Good Luck! :) |
wow thanks for the info :) all take armani in for the test and medication asap. we do have misquitos.. he is an indoor pets but I def dont wanna risk it :) |
My puppy had the heartworm test, then was put on the medication. They suggested I keep him on the heartworm year-round. |

Oh Good - because you know that those little mosquitoes can get inside with just opening the door. It really is cheaper to just get them on it than to have to treat it. Ended up that our Lucky actually "liked" the medication - I think it came in a beef flavored treat that he took monthly. |

How cute we want a calender :) |
When I buy a box of mine from the vet it comes with little red heart stickers that I stick on my calendar as a reminder. |
Heartworms is not a matter of 'may or may not'. It's more of a 'will' if not on any heartworm preventative |
I get my heartworm meds(heartgard plus) off the internet. I paid 21 dollars for a 6 month supply (and that included shipping) no perscription was required. My vet did not run a heartworm test, he said he does that at 6 months if they havent been on any meds for heartworm. Heres the website...check it out Petsuppliesnet.com :) |
