Vaccines Hi all... Im a concerned mommy today. I Brought Benjamin to the vet yesterday for some more shots... and everytime I wask how many more.. they tell me alot. So yesterday I expected him to be groggy afterwards.. but today he was pretty sluggish with no appetite too... SO Im worried that my baby is being over vaccinated... And i feel like every time i go to the vet they deworm him... how many times should he be dewormed? what vaccines does he need and how many?? If any one has any info please let me know... they dont even tell me what shots they are giving him they just check off boxes on my bill.. So I started an index card to keep track of all my babys health records... I dont know.. Im kinda stressed and freaked out.. Im in the process of looking for a new vet in the meantime.... |
I'm not sure there is a standard as it appears that each state has regulations. In Michigan, a puppy is considered "done" with puppy shots after 4 rounds which include distemper and lepto with one rabies shot given at 6 months. Any number of other vaccines can be thrown in; bordetella (two rounds), parvo, giardia, etc. However, with these small pups, it is really important that you have a vet that understands they don't need anywhere near the mandated dose of the vaccine. And for extra caution, only one shot should be given at a time and never in a combined shot like distemper/lepto. Most breeders also begin vaccines before the pup leaves them. I'm not sure about the worming, but it seems that one or two wormings by the vet followed by a negative stool sample should be enough. If your vet won't listen to you, find another one. There are many great ones out there with experience with tiny dogs. If your baby is still lethargic tomorrow, I would call your vet. It isn't normal for them to continue like that. Many pups will get sick, or have a reaction (which is all the more reason to be cautious) and not be themselves the next day. Good luck & keep us posted. |
We got Ellie at about 8 weeks (I know it was way to early but we were uninformed). We took a stool sample to the vet and it must have been negative and all others after that. I'm not sure our vets have ever dewormed her. It was probably taken care of by the breeder. As for the vaccines, I would get a new vet if they won't tell you which ones they are giving. Personally, my dog will never again be vaccinated for Lepto (a lot of people will disagree). It was most likely the Lepto that caused a life threatening reaction in her. |
Yep, and from what I've read, the lepto vaccine does not cover all strains...only some of them |
