Brushing Teeth I know there are a lot of new Yorkie owners on this site, and I would like to remind everyone to take care of their Yorkie's teeth. Get them used to the toothbrush now that they're young and impressionable. I myself have neglected Otis's teeth and he's paying for my mistake. When Otis was a puppy, I refused to have his teeth cleaned by the vet because I didn't want to have him anesthetized. I've heard horror stories about broken trachias from the tubing and dogs not waking up, esp small dogs. But like a dummy, I didn't brush his teeth on my own. Now Otis is four years old. Several months ago, I had a professional dog hygenist come to my house to scale Otis's teeth. She did it in a way where he didn't have to be anesthetized. She told me Yorkies are notorious for having bad teeth. She found two loose teeth, and told me if I didn't start taking care of his teeth, he would lose them all pretty quickly, and he would have to gum his food. I felt terrible. So from that day on, I make a wholehearted effort to brush his teeth at least every other day. Please don't make the same mistake I made, and start brushing your Yorkie's teeth today!!! |
Yeah, we're sticklers for brushing his teeth, our vet told us early about the potential for bad teeth. Yoda has his own green Four Paws toothbrush even! It fits on my finger. :) I believe we take him once a year to the dentist. Here's a small picture of it: http://www.petco.com/product_info.as...ite=4566341038 |

Otis uses the finger brush too, and he also has a "Buzz Lightyear" toothbrush, and he uses the meat-flavored toothpaste. |
Good tips Junebug! I will definitely pay attention to teeth. |
can I use regular baby toothbrush to use on my pup? is 10 weeks too early to introduce her to a toothbrush :D ? |
Try greenies? My dog quincy hated me brushing his teeth so my vet suggested i give him greenies, thet clean his teeth alot better than i could using a toothbrush and they are great for his breath :) linda |
Lol speaking of brushing teeth, Ranger found his daddy's toothbrush and decided to brush his own teeth! He carried it around in his mouth for the longest time, so I put the doggy toothpaste on it and he went to town. He still has it, but has chewed out all the bristles. I never knew he'd be a stickler for brushing!! And boy does he love his greenies, but don't tell him they are good for him b/c then he won't want one anymore ;) |
Luca Dean has HORRIBLE breath all the time! Even after I brush his teeth! Greenies are only temporary help. Any ideas? He drinks plenty and eats only Science Diet, his oil supplements (vit. E, olive oil, and a carrot oil blend,) small pieces of Marrowbone treats, and meat baby food. Also gets plenty of rawhide chewing in, which I thought helped breath? Is it because he's teething, or are small dogs more prone to bad breath? Anyway, Dean would chew on the toothbrush on his own for a few days, but once he started teething, it's became hell trying to get anything in there to clean. I'm going to keep trying, just to get him in a habit. |
What do you brush Lucy's teeth with? I use diluted Listerine, as instructed by the vet, and a baby toothbrush. Otis's breath has dramatically changed for the better. It still stinks, but not nearly as bad as it was before. |
I use Pet Dental toothpaste. It's made by Four Paws. It's the meat flavored kind. The kit came with the finger toothbrush and another dog toothbrush with a large tip on one end and a small tip on the other. I wouldn't have thought of Listerine! I'll try that. How much do you dilute it? I think he may have bad breath from the baby food. Thanks for your help!!!! |
