Nails Do you guys clip your yorkie's nails yourself or take them somewhere, like to Petsmart? I can't imagine getting Hercules to sit still long enough for me to clip them, and I also can't imagine someone else getting him to sit still long enough. |
Hello. I clip all three of my dogs nails myself......... You just have to be firm and let them know you are boss when it is grooming time. It might be a struggle at first, but eventually with patience and persistence you will be able to get him to lay still. I think it took Mei Mei about 3 times before she layed still for me, she was 13 weeks at that time. Also, make sure you don't cut the quick, or you will have a struggle!! |
We've never been able to cut Yoda's nails by ourselves, so we take him to Petco to do it. If you do manage or are brave enough, it is possible to do yourself, we just don't want to end up hurting him accidentally when we do it. |
Mei Mei's mom - sure wish you'd come over and do Gyps and Gizz's nails!! I am a coward and wait until they are asleep and just snip one or two on each foot at a time (yeh, then I forget which I've cut and which I haven't!!) - Gizzie has CLAWS!! They are improving now I've cut them and she is walking more on hard ground now, but sure that girl has cat in her!! |

I clip Chester nails my self.. I gage it on the one nail he has that is white. It took two months for him to sit still when I did them. The first time he was very scared. You have to play with their feet alot when you first get your puppy. I have done Chesely's twice now and she just sits still but I think that is because the breeder used to groom her so she is not scared at all. but she did not want me to touch her feet/paws LOL, either when I got her. Now she does not mind at all. I have to say Chester and Chelsey are angels when it comes to bath time. :p I give them there hair cuts and clean there ears too. last month was the first time I took chester to the groomer as I 'm trying to grow his coat out. |
I know, I can't really imagine trying to clip Hercules' nails either. He's just a ball full of energy most of the time! I'll probably end up going to Petsmart to have his nails clipped. Thanks for everyone's thoughts! |
at present we have 12 yorkies plus one 6 week old pup;and we do all the grooming, including anus glands and nails ourselves; you do what you gotta do !! jerry  |
Oh my gosh, I can't believe you do the grooming all 12 dogs and puppy! That's amazing!! |
 12 Yorkies + a pup?!? Hats off!!!! :D |
Yeah Jerry has the reputation of being pretty amazing LOL!! Come over to Wales and see to Gypsy Rose and Gizzie Chavi please Jerry!!! |
I clip my SNoodles nails and hair and ears etc. She is terrible I to believe she has CAT in her. I am lucky in that my husband will help hold her for me.. But would sure like not to have to restrain her to do it. She lets me bathe her okay, and brush her teeth and comb her, but when it comes to nails and a sissor, she is a wild one! I do keep rubbing her feet, put her on the table, and have her sit and lift a paw and play with it, but get a clippers close to her and "CAT". I did read here somewhere where someone wrapped them in a towel and put them between their legs and was able to clip them. Just wondering if they were upside down on lap or right side up. Pat |
Mojo is a sweetheart, even though he is one of those dogs that are always running around and doing things to be the center of attention, he is very nice when it comes to grooming. I only took him to the groomer once (which i do regret) since then i cut his nail, give him baths, pluck the hair in his ears and trim his coat :p I have to say it is not hard at all, all you need is a little practice to turn grooming into a happy and nice time together for you and your pet. |
WOW! The minute I pick up a sissors or clippers or anything to do to her, she starts screaming like I killed her or something. Would love to have her sit and offer me her paw or just sit kind of quiet. How did you get to that point? Your Lucky! Pat |
Dogs learn by association...so you have to let them associate the grooming process with something pleasurable for them. Take them for a walk, to the pet shop or just play with they and give some treats. I don't think they will ever really like to be groomed, Mojo behaves very well but he looks like he is almost screaming GET ME OUT OF HERE...hehehe |
