Pooping and Anal Glands Since this is my first yorkie and small dog, I have nothing to go on so please forgive me if this question is dumb. I fed Carl at 6:30 last night and waited 20 minutes before I took in out to poop. When I did, he did nothing. We went out several more times before bed and he still didn't poop. Took him out this morning after we woke up and still no poop. He does pee. Eating is fine. In fact, he's eating faster and better than the first couple of days that he was here. Yesterday, there was quite a bit of dragging his butt on the floor. Dont know if that has anything to do with it. If his anal glands need to be expressed, does that mean that he won't be able to poop or how does this work? I have fed him again this morning at 7:30 and will take him out to poop again. I'm assuming that if he doesn't do anything we have a problem. I should add that he did poop a couple of times before dinner yesterday. The last trip, the poop seemed more like greenish/brown mucas than anything. He plays vigorously, so I have not noticed any lethargy. Am I over reacting here? |
Normally they express the anal gland when they poo. If the anal gland becomes clogged with poo particles, they will drag their bottoms along, to help drain it and also because their bottoms itch. If you see him dragging his bottom, then turn around and smell where he was dragging, then it is probably the anal gland. You might try giving your baby some pumpkin. Not the pie filling kind, but just regular canned or fresh pumpkin. Just a tablespoon or so. It will act like a stool softener and help him poo better. When you have him groomed, one of the things the groomer does is empty the anal glands if needed. If he seems to drag more than necessary, then you may want to have him checked for internal parasites. Hope he soon has a very Happy Poo Party. |

Alright!! Good Dog Carl!! Just couldn't resist! |
Way to Go CARL!!!!!!!!!! You know what they say. The party's not over until the fat lady sings. In your case, the Party's not over until Carl Poos. YEA!!!!! |
I didn't realize that I could be so happy to see poop! This morning he went to the back door and did the "spinning around in a circle" poopy dance. Another milestone for sure..... |
