[B]At What Age Do You Say, "Just Eat It?"[/B]
 

That's getting to be my problem every week. Maggie changes her eating taste every week. No sense in recommending a particular food. Been there, done that, and now I have a pantry full of food. This week she likes Royal Canin Puppy 33. Today she doesn't like that anymore. Today she ate Bil-Jac puppy. Week before last it was Natural Balance Food Rolls.

So, at what age do you finally just say "EAT IT". She is now 4 months old and weighs 3.8 lbs. She still gets her Nutrical once a day too.

Hope y'all can steer me in the right direction and away from the kitchen.

:p Been there!! Our Toto's appetite got so picky, she was driving us crazy! She got to the point where she didn't want to eat the same thing two days in a row!! Then started refusing anything that even resembled meat ... only wanted veggies! Long story short ... her tiny 3 lb. frame packed on over two extra pounds and our vet chewed us up one side and down the other!! :rolleyes: She said that we had to get the weight off and that she absolutely would eat when she got hungry! She gets 1/8 cup Nutro Ultra [weight control] in the morning and 1/8 cup in the evening. I keep about 1 tablespoon Royal Canin Yorkshire 28 dry available each day ... some days she eats it, some days she doesn't. She gets 3-4 liver treats daily and a few Yogurt Drops. The vet said to only give her Nutri-Cal is she appears a little hypoglycemic and she would be fine. The importance of keeping the extra weight off is because it puts extra strain on her little heart and her knees. I have to find a way to provide extra exercise for her because she has become quite the little couch potato!

Toto will be 2 yrs. old next month, so you should discuss Maggie's diet with your vet, but ours was absolutely right when she said "when they are hungry, they will eat!" ;) Good luck!

You are the master of the herd she is in, if you say jump she should ask "How high"
If she has eating RC33 once, then that's what she shall have until you decide otherwise.
Some yorkies are picky and we have to be firm when it comes to food.

Get used to the fact that some days your yorkie doesn't eat any of the food in her bowl and some days she does. It is not only ok, but good for her stomach, as it is for ours, to take a day with no food at all.
She will not be underweight or die of hunger - I promise you.

My oldest yorkie just switched from puppy food to grownup food and she didn't touch RC even though she loved the puppy version. So I tried Hill's Natures Best and she ate that :) So Hill's it is.
Now she looks at me EVERY day as if to say: "But mommy I much rather want the puppy version! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease...."
But she eats it. Not every day, but every other. And I put a teaspoon of oil in it twice a week for her fur and digestion.

And now - funnily, the youngest wants to eat Kalis food - which of course she can't since it's not good for her.

I tend to be the problem not my yorkies!! I see different foods and think I just must buy them for them to try! How fortunate I am that our greedy girls will oblige by eating anything more or less! With our previous dogs though I wasted so much food as they went off everything one by one so I sympathise! Fortunately I have a friend with a Bull Maastiff and any left over food always went to a good home LOL! I agree with the advice given, Maggie will eat when hungry but these little ones have a way of making you feel so sorry for them I know! Ana xx

I want to thank you all so very much. At almost 4 months old, Maggie has me wrapped around her little toe. I know now that ole Mama here, must practice "Tough Love". I have noticed that some days she will only eat maybe a bite or two. You can actually hear her tummy growl. The next day, she eats like there is no tomorrow. I will stick to RC33 until she is old enough to switch. She also has her doggy cheese crackers and liver bits for treats. Again, thank you.

With Zsa Zsa I never had problems . I changed Jade's food two times . The last time , I decided it was enough , she went a day without eating but she was drinking . Now she is ok and never said no to her food .

I'm going thru the same thing with SOphie. She loves her new food for the first day or so, then reruses to eat it! I've been mixing cheese, yogurt or peanut butter with her food but now I see that I've gotta stop that. Tough love is TOUGH!

This morning I set her food before her and she didn't eat. Hopefully she will eat when she gets hungry. This means no treats while I'm training her :( Maybe I should delay the training until her eating her food resumes.

Jennifer, today is day one of Tough Love. Maggie looked at me this morning like she had lost her best friend. She pouted herself to sleep. She woke up around 10am. I sat in the floor and played with her. I knew she was hungry, because I could hear her tummy growl. I got a handful of Royal Canin 33 and put it on her blanket. Would you believe she layed down in front of it and ate it. Then she wanted more. Good thing I was sitting on the floor, or I would have fallen out of my chair. I think this is going to work.

My little guy is going to be 11 years old this August, and I have learned a lot about dog food in the past 10 years. Most dog foods have issues of freshness and wholesomeness. If you switch dog foods your little one can have major tummy upset...have you ever wondered why? Here's what I do. I make my own dog food. It's a meatloaf casserole with chopped green vegies, plenty of fresh eggs, breadcrumbs I make, and ground beef. Mix it together and bake a huge batch. Cool slightly, then put daily portions into zip lock baggies and freeze all but 2. Each day I put one baggie of casserole from the frig. in the microwave for 1 minute, then let it cool. (don't forget to put one of the freezer bags into the frig, then) My little guys love it!!! I include different green vegies in each batch to offer a little vitamin variety. It doesn't cost more than the dry stuff I used to serve that they really didn't like. :animal-sm

That is totally what our dog rusty was like. he isn't a yorkie but he's still our baby. We must hae gone through 6 different foods for him before he picked one. I don't remember how we got the one he liked i guess we sut put new stuff infront of him and eventually he liked wht he got. but that stuff gave him gas lol ;-) so then we got a new kind. He loves that and it seems to be working great. oh yea we've had him for 7 years. It took about 7 months to find out what he likes. only once in a while he doesn't like it but then he just has to deal with it then the next day he eats it again.

Mocha seems to eat anything and everything I put i nfront of her.. At first she didn't like to eat just the dry food but Now she gets a teaspoon of wet food mixed with dry food for breakfast and then for dinner she just gets the dry food.. Then usually she gets the Nutrical in between

Is there a particular kind of wet food that Mocha likes with her dry food?

Not only do I have this problem with my furbaby, my daughter does the same thing. Yep, one week she, (my daughter) loves a particular something, I purchase it again and it's "mom, I hate that"......... :eek: I thought Trace would like some favor of dog food other than rice/lamb.....he ate it the first day and turned his nose up at it afterwards :rolleyes:

So far, this week is going pretty good on the "Mama Tough Love". First day, Maggie looked at me like, "Why Don't You Love Me Anymore". I almost gave into her, but remained strong. Since she liked RC33 and Bil Jac, I mix them together. In the morning I put just a small amount of treat in with her dry food. This morning, it was 1/2 inch of weiner. I mashed it really good and really blended it with 2 TBLS. of dry food. In about 2 minutes, the bowl was licked clean. When just eating the dry food, I hear her munching in the kitchen, but not for long. She prefers to eat her kibbles on her quilt in the middle of the den. I have been putting about a TBLS. of kibble at a time on the quilt. She will lay there and eat, while watching Animal Planet. :aimeeyork
