Fleas!!!!! Okay, I've done a search here, but haven't found the answer to my problem (exactly). I treated Ginger and Bernie about 2-1/2 weeks ago with Frontline. Neither had fleas at the time. Then we went to the beach. Now they both have fleas:eek: Vet says I can't treat for another week. Any suggestions??? |
Wash them both in Dawn dishwashing soap and leave it on for at least 10 minutes. It will kill all the fleas that are on them. |
Hey, call me crazy but my babies have NEVER had fleas. I started using frontline to "prevent" because we live here in Miami, well a week later i notice fleas on them:confused:  Yes, i did the dawn thing and that worked for them like a charm. |
Gosh, it will be interesting to see if Gracie comes back from the beach with fleas. I have been treating her with Frontline for months. |
Thanks! I'm going out to buy Dawn now! Does anyone know if I can condition them afterwards? Good luck at the beach. This happened to us last year, but we caught it while we were still there and since it had been 3 weeks since last treatment we got more from a vet there and took care of it right away. Yuch. |

I see no problem with conditioning them afterwards. The Dawn doesn't repel fleas. It just kills them. |
Dawn takes grease AND fleas out of your way!! lol |
Ugh! I hate those nasty things. When you bath the kids, place a ring of diluted shampoo around their necks first because the fleas will run upward; the shampoo at the necks stops them. Yes, leave on for at least five minutes to drown them. Good luck. PS I use Revolution on Charlie; vet recommended. |

Be careful about using the flea shampoo! Once a month is enough, it does have poison in it and can harm the dog if you use it too often. |
:aimeeyork Does dawn not dry out the babies skin? Just curious. |

I am sure if you used it every day it might, but you only use it when you need to kill fleas. |
Got The Solution. Ginger's mom. The same problem happened to me from the beach. My Yorkies NEVER had fleas and then I took Newman to the beach. He was loaded with sand fleas. Like you I could not treat him that soon. This is what you do. Get Johnson's baby shampoo. Put him in the sink and fill it with warm water all the way up to his neck as far as you can go without drowning him. Let him sit like that with you for about five minutes if he'll last that long without jumping out. After, you want to rinse him with your sink hose, rinse him thouroughly through his fir. Next, take the shampoo and use a lot rub it all over him until he's completely covered in suds, then take a warm towel and wrap it around him to keep him warm and he has to keep this on like this for atleast five minutes. Last, rinse him throughly again as you did and this should do it. You may have to repeat it again the next day. I did this not only with Newman but with my Bella when I first got her four years ago. She was infested with fleas and too young to treat. It worked like a charm. Just for your own info. Frontline or any of that flea preventative DOES NOT WORK when it comes to the beach. They are loaded there and it's so bad that nothing seems to keep them off your dog. Good luck. Elaine |

I would call and ask the vet, just to be safe. |
