Dry skin? My little one has had dry skin since I brought her home a little over a month ago. Is there anything I can do about this. I use an oatmeal shampoo with conditioner and don't know what else to try. |
What food are you feeding her? |
I have been feeding her NutriSource, which is what the breeder was feeding her. I plan to switch to Science Diet once her bag begins to run out. Any suggestions? |
Any food that has corn in it can make your dog itchy and it can cause food allergies. There are some excellent foods out there...Science Diet would not be one of my picks. Innova, Wellness, Canidae and Nature's Variety stick out in my mind right now but there are lots of others too. Here is a website where you can take a look at the better foods available, they're rated by stars, the 5 star foods are within the right protein levels for a Yorkie but the 6 star foods are too high in protein. Here's the website: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com Click on the link at the bottom and it will take you to the list. We use Nature's Variety raw diet, I know it's not for everyone but they also have dry kibble, here is their website: www.naturesvariety.com I have noticed some big improvements in my boyz since switching them to NV so we're sticking with that and home made food. Good luck finding a food that will work for your baby. Oh...also...when you bathe her make sure you get all of the shampoo out, rinse, rinse and rinse again...soap residue can also make them itchy. |
I would suggest diluting the shampoo your useing down to half and half. You don't need a lot of suds to get them clean. And make sure you rinse extremely well and then use a good conditioner. Start giving her cod liver oil gel caps each day as well. They need the Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. |
Thanks for the help! |
Supplements? I purchased a bag of Royal Canin, it was not affected by the recall but I don't think I want to chance it. After looking at many of other foods and comparing the ingredients her food seems to be better than the ones I have found. Is there any supplements I could give her to help with the dry skin? I noticed that someone mentioned coconut oil. |
