Nature's Variety Making My Dogs And Cats Gain A TON Of Weight!!! I thought I had found the food that I would keep my pets on, but they have gained a lot of weight just from being on Nature's Variety for 3 weeks!! I have one Ragdoll cat that has always had fat pockets in his tummy (this breed is prone to this) but my other Ragdoll has never had even a hint of fat pockets until we put them on Nature's Variety. I am so upset because this doesn't go away and it's not good for them. Harley, my Yorkie, already needed to lose a couple of pounds and now he is even bigger from NV. I had the dogs on Canidae and the cats were on Felidae before Nature's Variety. It did not put the weight on them, but it has the just about the same amount of protein. Any suggestions? I know it probably sounds silly, but Beauregard (my Ragdoll cat) is my baby...big time....and it upsets me that he now has fat pockets that he had never had. Any advice that you can to us, I would really appreciate. Thanks! Tammy |
My advice would be to: - increase exercise - give them less food - change food brands Good luck! I would just suggest changing the food since it's obviously affecting all of them, fat will lead to increased pressure on your Yorkie's joints, possibly resulting in luxating patella, etc. |

Also, you shouldn't give the dogs and cats the same food, usually cat food has way more protein than the dog needs! Protein will cause weight gain, only puppies (11months or less) need more protein. |

It's not because it has more protein. What you need to look at is the calories you should be feeding. And DON'T go by the guidelines on the bag - that's most likely too much. You can google a dog calorie calculator. 1/2 cup of one food is not the same as 1/2 cup of another food, just like 1/2 cup of peanut butter has more calories and 1/2 cup of carrots. If they are gaining weight it is because you are feeding too much. Generally the better the food the less you feed of it. |
