Can Yorkies have soy milk? I am baking cupcakes for my Yorkie's birthday tomorrow and have to use soy milk and soy margarine because some of my guests are lactose intolerant. So I was wondering can my Yorkie eat it? I made one for him without sugar and was thinking of putting some strawberry yogurt on top instead of frosting. The other ingredients are: flour, baking powder, vanilla, and eggs. Is that safe for Yorkie tummies? :) |
Yes, those ingredients are safe, and as far as the soy milk goes, I don't see why it wouldn't be safe. Many of the vegetarian foods for dogs include soy. Happy Birthday to your yorkie!!! |
You could also use Lactaid milk or rice milk. |

Your welcome, and have a really fun day!! |
Baking powder, I remember reading somewhere, is NOT good for Yorkies! I will try to find the source for you, but it's really not good for them at all. (they included it along with the dreaded chocolate, raisins, onions, etc.) Okay here it is: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/dangero...dog/page1.aspx Baking Powder and Baking Soda. Baking soda and baking powder are both leavening agents. A leavening agent is a common ingredient in baked goods that produces a gas causing batter and dough to rise. Baking soda is simply sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder consists of baking soda and an acid, usually cream of tartar, calcium acid phosphate, sodium aluminum sulfate or a mixture of the three. Ingestion of large amounts of baking soda or baking powder can lead to electrolyte abnormalities (low potassium, low calcium and/or high sodium), congestive heart failure or muscle spasms. I'm not sure exactly what "large amounts" entails. You might be alright if you're just adding a teaspoon of powder to a large batch of cupcakes. |
Yes, she should be okay in just a regular dog cake recipe. I imagine that her dog won't be the only one eating it. Many dog cake recipes have baking powder. |

According to the veternarian Dogter J (http://dogtorj.tripod.com/id5.html), both dairy AND soy are really bad for dogs. I would NOT give your dog soymilk if it were me. |
He had a great time at his party yesterday. I'll post pix later because I am at work now. As for the baking soda and soy milk, he only ate half the cupcake I baked him and he only has this special treat once a year. He hasn't had any digestive issues so I think he is fine in that area. Unfortunately he is at the vet right now because he got his dew claw caught on something while running in the yard this past Sat. so he is having surgery to remove them. |

Also, a tsp of yogurt is actually recommended. |
