My 15 Month Yorkie Hasn't Ate In 30 Hours! Help!

hello, new here to the board,
my Yorkie born last year in August is usually incredibly active and only goes to bed when I go to bed and even then, he's very alert to his surroundings.
yesterday he was with me all day and very active and playful.
when I finally came home, he was sluggish and tired. I figured this much since he was with me all day and took a long drive with me....
so today, he has not ate anything for about 30 hours, he has drank a little bit of water, but this is not like him. his nose is dry, his body feels a little bit warm and I have given him nutri-cal a couple times today, usually after the force fed nutri-cal, he's pretty okay, in fact, he's played with his kong that had a cookie in it. the only thing he's eaten besides nutri-cal is a couple dog treats.

but for the majority of the last 30+ hours, he's been just resting and very lazy. 60% of the time, he responds when his name is called and usually when I leave his side, he immediately folows, but not today.
also, he is able to jump onto my bed, which is a decent height, so I'm not panicing, but when he jumps off, he lands a little un even, sorta as if he was drunk.

what can I do? is he just unhappy? or could he have a symptom to something major? btw, he's about 7.5lbs. maybe 8

This does not sound right!! We have a yorkie 16 months and another 4 months and they sleep, yes, but not too much. How long was the journey you took? I would say your yorkie is definitely unwell and maybe you could take him to the vet for a check up? Ours have never needed Nutircal or anything similar and we had 2 previous yorkies also. I'd be worried but I AM a worrier!! May be best to get him checked out tho'? Let us know how it goes, it's always awful when a yorkie on here is unwell and you'll find that everyone care a lot. Love, Ana xx

I suggest you pay a visit to the vet...it does not sound normal a dog just change it's attitude overnite, maybe something is bothering him and it is always good to be on the safe side.

I suggest you get him to eat as soon as possible. Mix his food with chicken or anything that's appealing to him. If his blood sugar is constantly low at such a young age, it can affect him when he's older.

fasteddie 11-18-2004 02:22 PM

Yes, please feed him (forcibly if need be) as soon as possible. 30 HOURS without food just isn't right. He may also be suffering from some kind of disease or may not be feeling well, I'd suggest a visit to the vet to be on the safe side. Also, you can put some sugar (just a bit) in his water, if he isn't drinking much water either. If he's 7 pounds, he definitely needs some food in his system! If you can't think up a reason why he isn't eating at all, rush him to the vet!

Babbie 11-18-2004 02:45 PM

I had vets tell me that a healthy dog can go for even 2-3 days without eating and not really damage their health. That's why i think that the most suspicious thing is the change in his attitude...i think something must be bothering him. Did you check with your vet? Also, try to have him eat something, even if just a fruit, to help him gain energy...

okay, so I took my teddy to the vet today and she checked him out real good, he wasn't as lethargic as he was yesterday, but he is def. just taking it real slow. she said, his temp is normal, his gums look good and his overall signs aren't bad. the only thing she said was that his abdominal muscles were a little tight. she said it may be gas, but other than that, she said it wasn't anything serious.

I'm worried, but this is strange.

fasteddie 11-18-2004 05:29 PM

Good to hear, maybe he just needs some rest then if the vet okayed him... Keep up updated! :)

teddy p 11-18-2004 09:28 PM

^^ okay, so one of the vets suggested that I get him some Mighty Dog which is high in fat and something, he'd prolly eat up right away and at least my dog will have something in him.......so I did and my little Teddy ate away.
he's def. 50% better, but not all the way hyper as he usually is.....
so i'll let him rest and make sure he keeps drinking lots of water.

i'll keep you updated.

fasteddie 11-18-2004 09:52 PM

YAY! Just don't get him TOO used to the high fat foods, or he may refuse to eat other kinds of food!

Welcome, teddy p!! Hope your little one is feeling better. Since the only thing the vet suggested was his little stomach being a little tight ... have you noticed a change in his stool? Could be a gastric problem or some sort of blockage? These little creatures are so quick, they can grab things and have them swallowed in the blink of an eye!! :)

Gypsy Rose 11-19-2004 07:03 AM

Keep a really careful eye on him but know you will anyway! This is strange but so glad he is eating at last - hopefully he'll recover very quickly now and you'll wonder what you were worrying about (they have a habit of doing that!!) If he's not 100% back to normal in a day or two though I'd want to take him back to the vet but sure hope he'll be fine!! Hugs to him!! xx

teddy p 11-22-2004 10:42 AM

you know I've seen him swallow fasteners from his kennel and all sorts of things that he throws up later, but always had his appetite even after his throw up. His stool a couple days ago was a little loose, but not diarhea.

anyways, he is 1000% back to normal, but isn't really eating fully. his water intake is good and he's very very playful again.

his mother (my wife has been outta town for 2.5months) and she suprised us for 2 days and Teddy was soooo excited, it def. helped i'm sure.
but she's gone now for another 2 months, so I hope it won't affect him.
he was fine up until last week.
but his stool is hard for the past 2 days.

fasteddie 11-22-2004 11:04 AM

That sounds promising, being playful is good, perhaps if you tire him out by playing, it'll increase his appetite a bit. Also, just make sure he doesn't shake from not having any food or anything in his system. :)

Oh, and also, I don't know how attached he is to his Mom, but your wife being away may have made him depressed a bit, and yes, our little ones can get depressed...

Gypsy Rose 11-22-2004 11:09 AM

Couldn't agree more that an energetic pup is good!! He is bound to missing his Mom too!! Do hope he comes on in leaps and bounds!!
