Allergies? Buddy started scatching a lot two weeks ago and has now gone on to chewing his feet obsessively. His left eye is watery and kind of red and swollen around the eyelid. I have been giving him children's benadryl, 1/2 teaspoon twice a day.{Vet's recommendation} I also bought some anti itch shampoo and a spray that I have used on him . I don't think anything is really helping too much. He seems a little better right after he gets the benadryl, but it soon wears off and he is scratching and chewing again. He has taken to hiding from me so I can't see him chew his feet and tell him to stop. I do have an appointment with the vet next Tuesday, but until then can anyone help with some other ideas? |
Could it be his food? Maybe he's allergic to one or some of the ingredients in his food. Also, maybe he has allergies to pollen and dust and stuff. I don't really have much advice. Just want to bump this up for you! |
I wish I could help. Cali is going in tomorrow for non stop itching for like 9 months. I have switched foods to no grains and had allergy blood tests and tried 3 meds and many visits to the vet with no relief. I will let you know if they give me any solutions that will help you as well. |
Thanks. I have switched food. Even have made homemade food for him. I think it is probably pollen as we are starting to get the yellowish green "dust" from the pine trees. I have gotten so I only take him out to potty and carry him in and out so that he is not touching the grass any more than he has to. What bothers me the most is how his personality has changed. He doesn't want to play or chase cats. He hides out in his crate most of the time. I feel so sorry for him. He obviously doesn't feel right. I can't get in to see the vet until next Tuesday. I live out in the sticks and there is only one decent vet for many miles, so going somewhere else isn't an option. They just told me to give him the benadryl until they could see him. I feel helpless. When my baby is under the weather I worry constanly. |
I have a 6 year old that has bad allergies as well. I give her benadryl and I keep hot spot spray meds. on hand. It helps with the biting and itching, you need to a soothing shampoo. Aveno really helps. Make sure you get all the soap out her hair. Keep one thing in mind even after the allergies stop she will have scabs that will need to heal. One flea bite will start it all over again. I really hope this helps you out. |
Sorry to hear Buddy is feeling bad....I've go to this site often for info...I find their articles quite interesting, maybe there's something to help Buddy.... http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/petallergies.htm |
Thanks everyone for your replys. I guess there is no magic bullet for this. Hope the vet can help, also. I just hope when the pollen time is over, it might go away. I don't want to deal with this for the whole summer. I would have a nervous breakdown!!! lol |
