Yorkie growth.. So what is the general rule of thumb for yorkie growth? my baby is four months old and just shy of 4lbs..now mom and dad were both no more then 5lbs so does this mean that he is pretty much done his growth spurt or is he going to be much bigger than them?i feel that he is growing fast and i have heard that you can double there weight at 12 weeks..he was 3lbs then? Hmm really curious to know? |
Hi Frankie's mom Hi Frankie's mom. I'm trying to figure out the same. LOL. We brought home our nine week old Yorkie girl on Friday. She is just hitting two pounds at nine weeks. Her mom was 3.5 lbs. and dad 4.5 pounds. They told us she'd be small. I guess we'll see. My Bella at seven weeks was 1.12 oz. Then at 13 weeks jumped for four pounds. At 17 weeks she was six or seven pounds. She's three years old now and weighs in just over 10 pounds. I'm hoping (I guess I'm being selfish) that she doesn't go over 5.5 pounds. They say they stop growing at around a year old. How much did your baby weigh at nine weeks? Elaine |
Btw PS. rule of thumb is I'm told triple the eight week weight or double the 12 week weight. Don't know if it works that well though since if that was right Bella would have been 8 pounds instead of a bit over 10 pounds. E. |
I think it varies. There is a growth chart on the forum and on the web in other places and you are right that is the rule of thumb. But i dont think that it is a gurantee. I think the growth chart stops at 18 months which i guess is what they are considering full grown. but there have been other people on here saying that thier dogs have had growth spurts close to that or beyond that. to me 4 months seems kinda young to be full grown already. my yorkie is only a little over 5 months and im sure she isnt done growing yet. shes still so small. |
Well my baby boy was i believe 2.2lbs at 8 weeks and then 3.2 lbs at 12 weeks and today at 16weeks just shy of 4lbs..i wouldnt mind him being closer to the 6-7lb range as that is the standard and he would be healthy..but i didnt want a 10lb plus dog? its hard to say i guess.... |
Anna at 4 months was 1.8 lbs. I havent weighed her since but doubt shes over 2 yet. |
1.8 lbs! my gosh that is so small..that is definately a purse dog! so cute..id be so worried id step on her though they move so fast..hes 4lbs and i still dont see him sometimes! |
Yea we have to watch her. shes more of a terror then youd think for such a small dog. i wanted a little one though. and i gues thats what i got. |

2lbs! my goodness i dont know where you guys must get your dogs that is sure small. I know in canada the ckc standard is up to 7lbs and havent really seen any much smaller than 5lbs..a breeder i know in 20 yrs of breeding once had a pup that was 2lbs full grown but was a total anomoly. I have heard about the 'teacup' yorkies but have never seen one. There was a runt in Frankies litter that was small but id say he will still be at least 3-4lbs. If a dog is that small his organs must be TINY!! i guess its a presonal preference, id rather see my dog closer to the 7lb end of it. |
In my case, Marcel was from an excellent show-breeder whose litter-mom happened to throw 1 tiny in her litter. She says she does see occasional tinies in her litters. Her "normal" dogs grow to about 4-5 pounds. |
mother is 3.5lbs????? they shouldn't have bred her. omg, that poor momma. good luck w your baby and i hope she grows up to be healthy and happy. |

We gave up on growth charts before Ozzie was a year old. He weighed very close to 4 pounds (somewhere in the 3.5-3.8 range) at 12 weeks. That means I should have an 8 pound dog. However, at almost age 10, I have a 13.5 pound dog. (He should be more like the 12 pounds he has been for most of his life. He put on the extra pound plus since being neutered last year.) As long as you've got a healthy baby, it shouldn't matter. |
I definately agree...weight doesnt really matter as long as he is happy and healthy. Just as long as he looks like a yorkie and acts like a terrier im happy:D They really do have the coolest personalities..definately a big dog mentality and that was what really sold me on this breed. I just cant fathom how a 2lb dog could ever be completely healthy.When frankie was a baby at 2lbs the vet worried about everything and couldnt even have all his shots. my parents bred pointers and often got stuck with the runt because they just werent desired and in this breed they charge more! doesnt really make sense to me? |
