Advantage vs. Other brands I was just wondering if there is a big difference with the advantage flea medication (one month kind) vs. those ones you see at Targe or Pet Store that is a different name brand, but offers the same outcome: which is to kill fleas for a month. I just bought a non-name brand from Target. I must say, it smells better than Advantage and it only cost me about 8 bucks! But I don't know if there's such a huge difference (other than the price) that I should stay with Advantage. Please enligthen me! :confused: Thanks! :D |
I'm not a real expert in this either, but this month I didn't have time to go to the vet so I bought Hartz 3 in 1 (ticks, fleas, mosquitos) and used that instead. However, afterwards I read that it is a very harsh pesticide and not as safe as frontline or advantage. I've been researching and these seem to be the best, safest two brands. I think I am going to go with Advantage because it repels and kills. All flea and tick medications are pesticides and I don't think any of them are really GOOD for our babies, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks, particularly because I live by a lot of wooded trails and lakes and there are lots of ugly nasty ticks (I found one on Ralfie before I medicated him). While there are natural methods like putting certain oils in their shampoo or pouring rosemary on them, I feel that medicating him is the most effective way to go.... :confused: but if I'm wrong please feel free to disagree- this is just what I have found so far :D |

We used to use the Advantage all the time, but it only kills fleas, not ticks. The new Advantix kills fleas too, but you can't use it on puppies younger than 12 weeks. Not long ago, our vet recommended FrontLine Plus. She said the chemicals in it are fipronil and methoprene, which she says are not as harsh as the permethrin? in BioSpot & Advantix. It is a bit more pricey - but it really, really works on ticks and fleas both. Also, we bought some FrontLine liquid stuff for ear mites that can be used on dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. We've been pretty happy with the FrontLine so far. Since we live way out in the country and are surrounded by woods, we needed something that really worked hard - and so far, we have no complaints whatsoever about the Frontline Plus. It doesn't leave a bad smell, no "greasy" looking or feeling spot, and it's waterproof too. Hope this helps. |

I have a sheet that has about 6-7 brands and what they each protect against, when I get home I can scan it and post it! It's really helpful, because you can then figure out which one you need based on what each one protects/repels against. |
We used to use K9 Advantix (from the vet) and it works for ticks, fleas and misquitoes. It just didn't seem to be working - course, we live in the WOODS on lots of land and have lots of wildlife. The vet recommended Frontline Plus - it is more expensive, but it doesn't work against misquitoes. We just started using it. I would love to try all natural ways, but time and finding everything can be so time consuming and hard to find! I have been told by numerous people (friends/relatives) who have used the store bought brands and they have all said they don't work...I don't know though, I have never tried them. |
