Anyone else with chronic pancreatitis?
 
Lately I've been doing a lot of research in preparation to switch my boy over to a raw/home-cooked diet. Partly because of all this recall craziness (I really don't trust ANY company anymore) and in my reading I found that raw/home-cooking fed dogs live much healthier and longer lives.

I thought about starting with some plain and simple scrambled egg, but it's not so simple. My poor boy has chronic pancreatitis and I can't find any information on it. Everything I come across is related to acute pancreatitis and tells me to rush him to the vet, no food & water, IV fluids, etc.

So is there anyone else out there living with this? Is there some guide book that tells you everything you can & cannot fed? I know a vet-prescribed special diet is available but it's not enough. I want him to have a complete, balanced diet that commercial kibble/wet food could never provide.

Just bumping this up for you. I hope you get the information that you need!! Definitely homecooked is better, you just have to make sure that he's getting all the nutrients that he needs. I got this book recently called "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", and it is awesome!! I just did a quick search for you to see what it says about chronic pancreatitis and it has a lot of useful information. It includes some diets that would be safe and also prevention, and treatments of chronic pancreatitis. This book is a wonderful investment. I got it on amazon.com for super cheap. I think maybe $12.00.
A couple of things it emphasizes: Small, frequent meals are much easier on them than one or two regular or large meals. Also, feeding at rooms temperature and decreasing the amount of fatty foods make it easier for digestion. It has a bunch of other information, it's just a lot to list on here. There must be some books out there regarding this. I hope someone has some good answers for you!!

Keeping an eye on this thread to watch and learn. Gizmo also faces this from time to time. I had finally found the Chicken Soup that he could eat with no problems..now the recall. I read on here that some feed scrambled eggs so that's what he had for dinner. No problems yet, but he can't live on that. Racking my brain to think of something at Petsmart we haven't tried. The book sounds awesome. Maybe I'll stop at Barns and Noble today. All else fails we'll have to go back to the dreaded i/d. Good luck in your search hun. Maybe others will have some good ideas. Guess we'll be having chicken tonight.

Thanks so much for bumping my topic up AND for the great reference!!! You've definitely given direction to my troubled mind :D I'm running to the book store right this second!
