Please I Need Help!!! My 2 year old yorkie Ginger was diagnosed of Luxating Patella Both knees. The Ortho Surgeon recommended surgery but he said that he will do both knees at the same time. His reason was... to shorten the recovery meaning if 1 knee will be done - it will take around 6 months for each knee, total of 12 months. I would like to get your opinion which is better: doing both knees or just one knee at a time. For those who had experience on these kind of surgery, how long is the recovery? My Ginger has full coat, how far do they shave? |
My Zada had both knees done at the same time last June. Recovery time is 6 to 8 weeks, wheather it's one knee or both. Just keep her in an expen for the first two weeks solid, then about one minute out in the yard on a leash twice a day for another week, then a couple minutes three times a day and so on. Take it VERY slow with her recovery or the knees won't heal right. |

I would think it would be easier to have them do one knee at a time. Woulden't doing both knees at the same time put more stress on her. Yes the recovery time might be quicker if you do them both at the same time but that means she has two knees that she can not use for awhile. IMO, I just think it would be easier on Ginger to have one done at the time but that is just my opinion. If mine had to have the surgery and had both knees done at the same time, I think they would be really depressed because it would be harder for them to move around and mine don't like being still for that long after a surgery. Sorry Ginger has luxating patella. Good luck with the surgery, I hope all goes well!! |
Our late Gracie (RIP, my angel) had both knees done at the same time. She was only a year old and recovered very quickly. She learned to spread her little casts and go tee tee. They shaved her back legs to do the surgery. After two weeks, the casts came off and she immediately started running and playing. We also put her in our bathtub and gave her water therapy. Always supervise water therapy because they can't get out of the tub on their own. We put her little life preserver on her as well while doing this. I agree with your vet. Do both and get it over with. JMHO |
Mojo's vet had said that his knee caps move too, but if they were not bothering him (stopping him for jumping or hurting when he runs, etc) - which we have never noticed a problem.......that she would do surgery, but they would do it one at a time because it be easier on him. He hasn't had any problems, so the vet hasn't recommended surgery for him yet. Like most surgeries, I would think they would shave pretty much the whole leg area. I would just sit down w/ the vet and go over everything to see what it will include and what will be done. Thoughts and prayers for your little one! |

The Vet. that did Zada's knees is a specialist. The reason he didn't do both at once is he didn't think the added weight on the other bad knee was a good idea. Here is the way I fixed her up with an expen, crate and foam pad to walk on. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...3June06001.jpg |
Roxy had both done at the same time. Her surgery wasn't that bad, the Vet only deepend the groves, tighten the muscles. She was confined to an xpen for 6 weeks. The first 4 days she sepnt in the Hospital. The next week was rough, b/c she really couldn't walk but wanted to. I had to make a make shift 'sling' to hold her up for her to go potty. After 6 weeks, she was allowed free run, but, we went back for a check up and her one leg didn't stablize, so she had to do surgery again. This time it was the classic 'cut and pin' type surgery for LP. Her recovery time was a minimum of 8 weeks. I have been told by many that b/c they are soooooooo tiny, they recovery quickly and can handle doing both at the same time. This is a very serious recovery period. You can't not let them have free run and normal yorkie life until the Dr. says they are healed. There are sooooooooooooooo many posts here on YT talking about LP.
