How do you know when dry dog kibble is spoiled When I opened the bag of dry food, I threw the bag away & put it in another container for storage so if there was a Best By date I didn't see it. So now I'm wondering what are the signs of spoiled dry dog food? Does it get moldy or get bugs or what? Thanks for your help.:) |
All I know is that when the fat in/on the food is spoiled it goes rancid & the food can have an off smell.... not sure if this link will shed any light..... http://www.peteducation.com/article....articleid=2804 |
Very informative article. Thank you.:) |
I buy the smallest bag and keep it in the fridge. |
hmmm not sure...i never thought of it.... |
It will smell rancid. Smell a good bag and you will know if you ever have rancid food. I bought some Eagle Pack for my cat on clearance and when I opened it, the smell was bad. I took it back and the guy working there said he had smelled worse. What a block head! I just returned it. I just threw out the tail end of a large bag of Merricks cause it had turned bad by the time we got to the bottom. I only bought the large size that time cause it was really cheap and I got some free stuff with it. I also keep food in the freezer to make it last longer, if I need to. |
Divide into smaller portions....put in gallon freezer bags, get as much air out as possible and freeze.....Works great! |
I thought someone posted earlier about the moisture from freezing causing the food to mold?? Is that not true? |
I have never bought a bag larher than 5 lbs ... I hope it did not go bad ... but good question ... how would we know? |

I keep some dog, cat and bird food in the freezer - have for years and have never had a problem with mold. |
Thanks, that's good to know:) |
