How many times a day does your Yorkie eat? I'm asking because Adie has stopped eating her morning food. We all get up at 5AM and she gets Royal Canine almost immediately. We leave it down until 9AM and she eats none of it except on days when she may eat 2 or three bites. We then feed her again at 3:00PM with the bigger dogs. She will eat sometimes and sometimes she won't. She turns a year old this month so she is still on soft puppy food for that feeding. We hope to switch her over to a brand she will go nuts over on the 20th. I have been experimenting the last few weeks with different foods and haven't found one she likes all that much yet. It is getting pretty expensive. I'm at a loss. In the afternoon feeding she will sneak over to Cassie's bowl and eat as much as Cassie lets her have. She seems to like it just fine but I think she eats it more out of jealousy, It is the gravy and meaty pieces from Mighty Dog. I tried giving that to her in the morning and she walks away from it too. The only thing left to do is to discontinue her morning feeding. But is one meal a day appropriate for a Yorkie? Adie is well developed and isn't the least bit skinny. She is still 4lb 2oz. She is only eating once a day anyway so what difference would it make? Any suggestions? Thanks for any thought you get. Autumn gets 1/2 cup a day. I feed her twice (6:30 am & 5:30pm) 1/4 each time. I think you could stop the puppy food and give her the adult food. Good luck!!!! |
We're the same as autumn star- 1/4 c in the morning and 1/4 c at night. I don't really have any advice to get her to eat in the morning although I do agree you could go ahead and swich her to adult food. I would think a 4 lb dog would need 2 feedings but maybe I'm wrong if she seems to be doing okay. |
We do four feedings a day now that we homecook, but whenever we used to feed dry, we left dry food out all day...We would measure out into the bowl the amount that he needed to eat, that way we could tell if he ate enough :) Hope this helps! |
My guys are larger (Yorkie 11lbs, but fit, and my Biewer boy is 6mos and 8lbs) but I feed them 2xs a day 1/4 each feeding. My biewer chows down immediately as does my golden, my Yorkie boy however is picky, it takes him awhile and he never quites finishes. I give him 1/2hr to eat, if he doesn't the food gets put up otherwise the other dogs will eat it. he usually eats better on his afternoon feeding. I generally don't worry anymore because he is healthy. Kathy |
I've got a big boy, too (13.5 pounds) who is nearly 10. He gets homecooked food twice a day (late afternoon and then again around 10 p.m.) He now also gets a few tablespoons of Yo Baby! yogurt around noon each day. |
According to my vet it is appropriate for a yorkie to eat only one meal a day from the age of 1, you ofcourse have to ensure that the food in very wholesome. Hope that helps:) |
romeo eats several times a day - sorry but i do not count because i leave him something down all day in case he wants to eat. that is his dry kibble. i home cook for him for breakfast and dinner. i do know he eats his biggest meal of the day in the evening. Quote:

All four of ours nibble on and off all day and eat one larger meal in the evening about 5:00p.m....we keep a little food down at all times...I wouldn't worry about yours not being too interested in the mornings, they are like children, they will eat when they are hungry....I promise;) |
One thing I wanted to add, is she getting anything to clean her teeth?? If she is almost a year old and only eating soft food, she'll need something to keep her teeth cleaned. Usually a crunchy kibble will help with this. You may be cleaning her teeth, lol, sometimes you read these threads and if something isn't written, it leaves one to think, oh no, she isn't doing this or that...so not insinuating anything, just checking....Her little teeth and jaws are strong enough for a crunchy kibble....:) |

I'm thinking maybe I should give her home made food in the afternoon and yogurt in the morning. I think she would go along with that. I'm betting it would have to be a sweet yogurt. Even fruit-filled. Any thoughts on that? Yorkies-Mom, what all do you use in your home-cooked food? Can you make a week's worth and store it in the fridge? </IMG> |
An easy home food is to buy HUMAN canned chicken (usually it's near the canned tuna) - my guys like this better than boiled chicken breast! They go crazy for it. I make enough rice for the week and combine it w/ the canned chicken. I'm also starting to add Embark from Honest Kitchen. |

i got a list of foods they could eat from someone here a few weeks ago but he really loves his brown rice and chicken. yogurt in the morning and like is said - his kibble is down all day for him to eat when he wants something else. he also loves ground beef. i just try to mix it up and give him a variety so that he doesn't get bored. |
