Few quick questions. Yorkie in heat Hi all. I don't usually post here but I have some questions and I'm hoping someone can help. Sorry in advance if these get asked a lot! My little yorkie is 2 years old and we're getting her spayed at the end of May (I know I should have done it a long time ago) Anyway she is in heat right now and is sleeping ALL the time. Is this normal? I've noticed a few other times that she's been in heat, but I can't remember if she slept this much. Also, about how long does it usually last? I'm wondering since we are getting her spayed if they will be able to if she is still in heat. TIA for ANY help, sorry if my questions are kind of stupid!!! |

Kayah is in heat right now.. and well.. she's here in my lap sleeping:rolleyes: I think it's normal to sleap so much while in heat.. she doesn't want to do anything BUT sleep. As for the lenght, I believe it lasts about 28 days.. but I may be wrong:confused: maybe someone else can help |

My girls sleep a lot while there in heat. That's all they really want to do. Heck do you want to really do anything while your on your period. I know I don't :p The vet told me that the heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks. (The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen. Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.) Also I dont think the vet will fix her while she is in heat... but I could be wrong??? |

That is not at all uncommon for her to want to sleep more. Behavioral changes during the period (no pun intended) are very normal. And a vet CAN spay while the female is in heat.:) |

A vet can spay her while in heat but a good vet will never do it during heat . |

Thank you guys so much for the help! I think I will call the vet just to be sure that I don't need to reschedule the appointment to get her fixed. I feel a lot better now though about the sleeping thing:) |

Also the Vets prefer to do it mid-way between heats, as that is when they have the least hormones in their system, instead of being left with hormones at a high which causes problems....but can't remember why....your Vet would know though;) :animal-pa Debra, Scotland |

Also this surgery should no be performed at the same time of a C-Section because the risk will be higher . |

Very interesting. I know my parents had to have a female spayed during her heat once due to some medical issues. Thank goodness everything went OK! I guess it was worth the risk in that case. Scary stuff. |
