Ear Plucking OK IM THROWING THIS OUT TO YALL - WHO PLUCKS AND WHO DOESNT AND WHY. IM HAVING ISSUES WITH THIS. I KNOW THE REASONS FOR IT, BUT IT JUST SEEMS SO PAINFUL. ARE THERE PRECAUTIONS I CAN TAKE AND NOT PLUCK? TIFF AND ABBIE:animal-pa |
It is not necessary unless your dog is prone to ear problems. Usually if the ears are erect they don't have problems, it's dogs with ears that hang down that have problems. There are exceptions of course. |
I took Bella to the groomer for the first time a month ago and the groomer began doing it; I FREAKED out. SCREAMING "STOP!!!" thinking it was hurting her; Bella didn't move, didn't make noise or anything. The groomer explained that sometimes the water will attach itself causing ear infections and you have to be carful where you grab the hair from because different parts of the ear are more painful then others; but the groomer said where she was pulling was not painful and it was fine. Bella seemed fine as well. I wouldn't ever attempt it myself though |
I must be lucky , my girls don't say a word when I pluck their ears . I don't use any special methods , they just sit and wait . |
i have never heard of plucking the ears...i am interested to see what everyone says about this!! |
I pluck Zoe's ear myself, she flinches a bit not a big deal. Normally, she goes to a regular groomer every 6 weeks and she gives her the works but doesn't do the ears. I think some people use some sort of power to alleviate the plucking. I don't see how it's much different from us plucking our brows or even waxing. I have my brow waxed and it hurt initially but you get used to it. |
Hey, I've also never heard of plucking the hairs, but I new to YT's. Is it just for looks, or more about the infections? Do you pluck only the only from inside the canal? Any info is helpful. Thanks |
I pluck the hair out of Cuddles ears and she does not say a word. They say it does not hurt them. Just do it fast with quick jerks. They say they can even hear better, but I do not want to take chances at ear infections. Blessings |
I plucked my 12 week old Yorkie. You can use Styptic powder and there are other powders. You can get a very good grip on the hairs with the powder. The puppy did NOT cry. At first he freaked out and tried to squirm away but as soon as he realized that I was not cutting him! lol he stood still. I prefer the clean plucked ears because of water getting in there, the ears are way cleaner in my opinion and our vet said she recommends it because even though erect ears don't suffer as much from infections as floppy eared dogs, she has seen erect ears with infections because so much hair in the canal get's clogged etc.. I got my yorkie and his ear smelled like dirty feet? lol I plucked them and must have used like 10 Q-tips getting all the dirt out ! yuck!! lol His ears are nice and fresh now :bravo: The first time I saw the vet pluck Cookie's ear hairs I was suffering and I could not stay in the room. It just looked so painful. Now I do it myself. If you don't want them plucked you could also keep them very trimmed down with tiny scissors. That was not an option for us because Cookie was more afraid of the scissor making a snap sound ! lol Genie Cookie Lola Angel |

Oh no, I pluck to prevent infections, not for looks for sure. I'd never subject her to that for looks. It's only inside the cavity and our groomer said it's extremly important to get this done. |
The groomer I go to uses a special powder, just a tiny tiny tiny amount on her finger to grab the hair better. And yea its the hairs inside the canal |
my vet does highly recomend getting her ears plucked due to the infections and she has been to the groomers 3 times now and they are asking me if im SURE i dont want her ears done. i was just stunned the first time it was mentioned to me - i also pluck and wax my eyebrows and it is not something i look forward to doing and to think of that in the ear i cringed. but i really want to thank you all for your input - it really helps to here from others then just the ones telling you what you need to do and then giving a bill. i think i will start to have her ears done - she has one that stays up and the other down, but we have a pool and she likes to get in it and also live where there is humidity. thank you again. |

Jack's (Maltese) groomer plucked his ears from age 6 mos to 2 yrs. He always had itchy ears. When we moved, his new groomer (who worked at our vet's office) refused to pluck the hair from his ears and the vet agreed. It was causing him to have infections. Within a few weeks his ears cleared up. My 3 Yorks have never had the hair plucked from their ears and have not had any ear problems. That's my only personal experience with it. That is a good question to ask. |
Thanks for the info about ears, I try it on Duke. |
