Tick Emergency. Today Rocky was at my bf's moms and played outside a lot, and this evening we found 3 tick's in our house! 2 were on a blanket that Rocky was laying on, but I went through his hair and didn't find any, so I thought maybe they got in our house somewhere else. Just now he was laying undernieth the computer and I heard him try to eat something, sure enough there was another tick! So I figure they have to be coming from my baby :cry2: I haven't applied frontline on him since last fall because it has been soo cold, and the weather has been goofy and I forgot about it. Now I'm kicking my self:mad: These things are giving me the creeps! This is the first time I've ever seen a tick in my life! I'm arachnaphobic, and these disgusting things remind me of spiders, so now I'm starting to sweat and tense up and panic. Should I give Rocky a bath for now and check through him on his skin to make sure he has none? Tomarrow the bf is going to go and get frontline ASAP, but what should I do in the meantime? I can't make Rocky sleep in the garage, but I don't want these nasty things in my house! Also, is their a way to get them out of the house w/o calling an exterminater? |
First of all, take a deep breath and relax. I comb Rocky and give him a bath. shake out his bedding and then wash and dry them on the hottest settings that the material will tolerate. Good luck! I hate ticks, too! |

Also, I did a search on ticks here, I didn't read that much, but do you think he can catch any diseases from this if he got on stuck in him? He's UTD on vacinnes, but should I still take him to the vet? My stomach is in nots over this :( |

He'll be okay :) I'm terrified of spiders, too, so I know where you're coming from. I also have panic attacks when I see them. My 11 year old Golden Retriever has had TONS and TONS of ticks on her (living down South, outside most of the time) and she's still here & healthy as a horse  Deer ticks are known to cause Lyme disease (in people, don't know about dogs) but I'm pretty sure they're in hot places so you should be safe in Chicago. Good luck! |

I'm afraid to have Rocky sleep in my bed :( I feel so bad for him, he's laying in his tent looking like he's sad, even though I didn't tell him yet that he has ticks, maybe becuse I was screaming when I saw it. |
If brush Rocky thoroughly with a flea comb and be sure to get all the way down to the skin and then bathe him you should be able to get them all. |

Hilarious tick story..... I live in the south out in the country.... lots of critters here, spiders, snakes, chiggers and of course ticks..... Several years ago I was in AN INTERVIEW FOR A JOB and I felt something tickling my neck.... I very discretely (I thought) reached up and scratched the itchy spot and lo and behold I felt something  . I closed my fingers around it brought my hands down to my lap and took a quick peek -- it was a TICK! I can only imagine what my interviewer thought! I am sure he had to have seen it. Well I dropped the tick on his floor -- btw.... I did not get the job! Imagine that.... |
If you wet him down you should be able to rub your fingers through his hair and feel/see any that might be still there. I doubt that he is going to have any more, you are just a little "tick sensitive". I HATE ticks..... Yucko Plucko! We have the dreaded deer tick and brown dog ticks, I am sure we have other types too, but those are the most common in my area. |
I brushed his hair, ran my hands around him and found one! It was stuck in his hair, maybe a millimeter from his skin! Got it out, wanted to kill it but I lost it (I hope it's not on me, now I swear I can feel) I'm going to give him a bath. What if it layed eggs on him though! Would I even be able to see it? He's soo upset right now. He's like "mommy why did you take me in the garage at 1am to brush my hair?" He's actually making little whimpering noises...I'm being gentle with him, but I think he knows something is wrong :( Should I maybe call the vet tomarrow to get an antibiotic incase any of them bit him? Or even to have a professional do a double look to make sure I got them all? I probably sound like a psycho to some of you right now, but thanks sooo much for being understanding! I appreciate it soo much! |
Got another story...I was selling my motorcycle and a couple drove down from northern Wisconsin to buy it. We were standing in my kitchen doing the paperwork and he did the same...reached for his neck but was not discreet about finding a tick. YIKES!!! Right in my kitchen. He stepped outside to dispose of it. We then go outside so I can explain to him about the bike, the wife lets out of their van to relieve themselves their dog and a potpellied pig! I was so glad to see them leave but very sad to see my motorcycle drive away. TICKS drive me crazy. Along with spiders and snakes. Rae Rae, calm down if you can. Sounds like you are doing everything that you can right now. I got the creeps myself right now. |
Now that I think of it, the other day when I brought Rocky inside after going potty he started playing with something on the floor, I THOUGHT it was a spider, but now that I think of it, it probably was a tick. I saw the round body and numerous legs and assumed spider (well I also freaked out and didn't look at it that much). OMG what if Rocky's had them? I'm a terrible mommy :( I feel like s**t, and now because of my negligence my house is infested w/ these nasty little exoskeleton creatures, and my poor baby is suffering and he didn't do anything wrong :( |

No, I mean HOT. And dry, I think. I lived in North Carolina...that type of hot. Basically over 100 degrees for all of summer. I\'m in Ontario, Canada, and it was about 80 here yesterday & today, too... |
I did a little bit of research, and I guess they\'re are deertick\'s in IL...I found something that said Dupage County, I"m Lake County so i\'m not sure where Dupage is...but what I found was red and black, I\'m not sure if it was a deer tick or not. Rocky\'s all bathed and dry now...he did NOT like his midnight bath! But now he\'s resting and he gave me "Thank you" kisses! I was looking through his vaccinations, and I\'m not sure if he was vaccinated for Lyme disease, on the reminders it said in one year for Lymes, but I didn\'t see it on the list of what he had, I really can\'t tell w/ their abbreviations. Anyone know what the vaccination for Lyme disease is called? |
I just wanted to sympathize with you, and wish you luck with your little unwelcome pests...Everything will be fine, I\'m arachniphobic as well, and I know how stressful this situation would be. |
