Why "grain free" dog food if okay to give cereal etc?
 
I'm confused.

Like many of you, I feed Canidae - an "almost no grain" type premium food. Almost all 6-star foods (from the analysis site) are "grainless". Why?

So, my question is - why is it okay to give them cereal and rice etc.? What "grain" are we trying to avoid?

I know people on here give their babies Fiber 1, Kashi, Cheerios etc. - and lots of the homecookers on here say it's okay.

Are there good grains for dogs? Bad grains? Too much grain?

Alright all you intelligentsias who I know are here....it is making me a bit nervous that no one, perhaps, knows why we seek grain-free dog food...but then add grain for home cooking.

Where is our Yorkiedaze when we need her? :)

Cereal and rice are good. I think everyone iis trying to avoid wheat gluten, rice gluten and corn gluten because of the recalls

But...recalls aside, the real question is:

Why are "grain free" dog foods considered 6-star/best foods in general? And then, why is it okay to then add grain if home cooking?

I know there are allergy issues with some grains for some dogs other than that I'm not sure.......

Well I know some grains are allergy causers. I didnt think rice was though or oatmeal if you are talking about that for the cereal

Thanks, Chachi. This is what I'm trying to learn more about - for those of us who do want to try some homecooking, which grains are the "avoid" grains.

I think we should look at the definition of cereal "grain"

That is why grain free dog food is better.
