appetite Our yorkie recently has lost her appetite for dog food. I think it is because she smells my cooking & also she has gotten a taste of human food. When she runs from me I have put in my hand a very small piece of cheese or lunch meat & then she will drop whatever she has gotten in her mouth that she is not suppose to have & come for the treat. We don't give any table scraps at all ,so when she does get hungry which is by almost noon or later she will eat her dog food. I feed her two kinds of dog food- bil-jack & science diet & alter those two & sometimes mix together. My husband says she will eat when she gets hungry, but it concerns me. You would think that she would be hungry in the morning after fasting all night. Any ideas out there?? elcameno. |
Your husband is right. I do not know how old is your dog but mine sometimes go into hunger strike for 2 days (even if I mix the food with wet food). She goes into that mood if I feed her too much. So I try to schedule her to eat barely full so she will feel hungry and eat more constantly. BTW she is 9 months and 5 lbs. |
Hello My Harvey Is Also A Fussy Little Eater, He Goes All Day Until Late Evening Time Before He Will Eat His Meal, All He Has Is A Biscuit In A Morning. He Used To Eat Dog Food, But Now He Is Not Too Keen On It, I Have Started To Give Him A Small Scrambled Egg, About 2 Mornings A Week, Which He Loves. And Have Tried Him With Lots Of Different Foods - Not Impressed With Any Really!!!!!! I Am Now Going To Try Him With Home Cooked Foods, Rice And Chicken And Vegetables. He Has Me So Worried As He Is Only 3.5 Lb And I Do Not Like Him Not Eating Much - (even Though I Know That His Tummy Is Very Small, And He Must Get Full Up Quickly) Good Luck - Goodness Dont We Panic Over These Babies???????/ |
Not good dog food at all. Yes, your husband is right but any starving dog or person will eat anything if they are starving to death. That is NOT the way to handle a dog that doesn't eat. First off don't give her table scraps. They should not have salt and spices we put on our food. Their food should be more bland. I home cook for mine and have been doing this for 50 years. It's the only way to feed in my opinion. They eat with gusto, have more energy and are healthier and happier. |
Dear Yorkiedaze-- Please tell me what kind of food do you give to your yorkie? The yorkie that we use to have passed on at 13 yrs of agethis past November & we fed her table food. She loved some veggies, red meat & chicken. I had hoped that with this new puppy that she would take to dog food but i was wrong. I hear pro & con when it comes to both feeding dog food or human food so am confused. Elcameno |
I cannot even fathom why anyone would have any doubt what-so-ever about feeding "real" food!! After all it's REAL, and not made of diseased animals in a big boiling vat. My Vet. is a specialist who has been in business many years and has clients come to him from all over CA. ALL the local vets. in surrounding towns send their patients to him when special health or surgery procidures are needed. He knows what I feed my dogs and all the fosters I use to have off and on for years, and he will be the first to say "it doesn't get any better than that". He doesn't push dog food or yearly vaccinations. There are too many health and recipe books on the market written by holistic Vets. not to know real and all natural is the best avenue. Just do your research. |
Just a thought...Awhile back, we bought my yorkie a new bag of the same food he had been eating for months, and he refused to eat the food from the new bag. He wanted nothing to do with it. So my husband and I decided something must be wrong with it, so we checked the bag for the expiration date. And the food had expired 2 months before!! Miko had sensed that the food was bad. We took it back and went to a different store and bought the same food. He ate it just fine. Also, I agree with YorkieDaze, home cooking is definitely much better than dog food...You can't control what goes into dog food, but you can control what goes into your dogs bodies...As long as you have the time and you give them the right supplements, home cooking is the best route :) You can make the food in batches and freeze what won't be used in the first few days. And you can take the food out of the freezer the night before :) Good luck!! If you don't have the time to home cook, there are many quality dog foods that you can check out here: www.dogfoodanalysis.com The 4 and 5 star groups are best for yorkies. But with all these recalls, it's hard to recommend a good dog food. |
