Leaving my Missy at home during the hot summer days I know we have a little time before summer is here, but I wanted to be prepared. I saw a few threads about owners leaving their Yorkie at home during the hot summer months with the air conditioner on. Missy is about 6 months old and she is left at home alone for 5 hours at a time about 3 days a week. If I leave my air conditioner on that long, my electric bill will skyrocket. I am already leaving the radio and light on for her. Are their any other alternatives for cooling them off? I do have ceiling fans in a few rooms of the house, does anyone else leave their babies with only a ceiling fan? How about leaving a window fan only? Is this dangerous? I just didn't think about this when I got her 3 months ago. |
As long as you leave some fans on I am sure she will be fine |
Hmm...I'm really not sure. I leave the AC on full blast during the summer but on extremely hot days, I leave both the AC and the fan on. Sorry I can't be of any help to you. |
Maybe one day you should try it out yourself. Stay home with only the fan on for a few hours on a hot day, if you can't handle the heat, then chances are that your puppy won't be able to either. If its comfortable, then you have nothing to worry about. |
Just a thought ... maybe you could leave all the blinds closed so that you don't let the hot sunlight in. That always helps keep the house a little cooler. |
When we lived in Tucson Az, it could get up to 110 or hotter in the summer...in fact we would have at least 100 days of 100 degree or high temps in a row every summer. Even most air conditioning cannot handle that kind of heat so dog owners would use those gel filled cooling pads. I have seen dogs at dog shows on them as well. Also, keep the lights off or down, close curtains and blinds, use fans (floor type fans as well as ceiling fans for cross ventilation), make certain there is plenty of water and keep her barricaded in the coolest room or area with the cooling pad. You might consider clipping her hair short as well. It is wonderful you though of this ahead of time! I would set the air at a safe temp though, maybe 76-78? You don't have to have it ice cold but you don't want heat stroke either. |
i live in n.y. and i leave the ac on all day for lexi, i know my electric goes up, but thats the way it goes... i dont leave it on high, actually i leave it on 65 degrees . its really not that much money.... its way less than paying for heating in the winter.... it does get unbareable in the summer and i wouldnt want to come home to any disaster.... rather safe than sorry |
I am Australian...we have super hot summers where I live (gets up to 47 degrees Celsius) and something I do for my puppies is get little bottles of water from the supermarket, empty out a little bit of water and put some kibble in the water...leave it for awhile until it is soft and then shake the bottle hard until the kibble is all broken up. Put the bottles in the freezer...and there you have it, puppy ice blocks! Give them one in the morning when you leave and it will help keep them cool for awhile. Another thing we do here is freeze bottles of water then wrap them in aluminum foil and leave them out for the puppies to lie against Also a bowl of cold water in front of a fan will help keep the room cool |
What if you leave your ac on a timer so that it turns on and off through out the day your baby should be alright like that i also leave on the ac running all day. |
