Nutrients they aren't getting... Another recent concern of mine. Since the recalls I have been cooking chicken/brown rice/peas and mixing in a bit of canned Evangers to give it a bit of gravy and hopefully provide missing nutrients. I know I need to give a bigger variety so they get what they need. One of my concerns is they are now turning up their noses at dry food completely! I beleive the dry is good for them - their teeth - so I was experimenting with "good" and "natural" brands. Did I really mess up by starting to cook for them since now I don't feel they are getting everything they need and now they are refusing to eat dry?? |
Contrary to what most people think, I personally don't think that dry food is necessarily any better for their teeth. It's like saying that if we humans eat hard food like crackers or something like that, our teeth will stay cleaner. LOL :) Silly analogy, I know, but, oh well :) Try adding missing link to the cooked food that you make. That will ensure that they're getting nutrients that they need. Also, there are several books on cooking for your dogs where they include recipes for balanced meals. Do a search, there are some very good recipes on here. Also, one thing that I see in many of the dog food recipes is to add a bit of calcium carbonate to their meals. You might do a search on that as well. If you want to get them back on dog food but one that's more natural, I read about a food called The Honest Kitchen www.thehonestkitchen.com It's made in a human food facility where and us only USDA human grade ingredients. Also, this is the only pet food made in their facility. Take a look and see if you like it. Good luck! |

Is the honest kitchen raw food? I have checked it out before, but I've forgotten and have not looked again today. Not sure how I feel about raw food either? You are right...there are recipes out there and I really have to invest in a cook book -I've just been lazy I guess. But I want them healthy so I will do it. I guess the eating hard food thing sounds kinda silly when compared to humans! LOL! |
I am not concerned about their teeth because because I keep them brushed and clean. I just switched over to the honest kitchen and can't wait to see results :) |
Ok you guys....the honest kitchen....do you have to add anything to this or does it "come" with everything you need to feed? I'm looking at the website and will maybe look in the blogs to see anymore info. And they sell suppliments...do we need those too with this diet or is that just preference? Thanks! I'm tryin to learn! |

We are using Honest Kitchen and I honestly can't even imagine giving them any other "dog" food after doing some reserch into what goes into the dog foods. I can feed them this without worry. We tried the Force because it doesn't have grains but they didn't take to it right away so we went to the Verve. Still needed alittle coaxing with added chicken broth and sweet potatoes but now they are right on board and look forward to it. Evnetually I will try to go back to the Force. You don't need to add anything. Everything you need is in there I just add for variety. But trying to wean them off of the added stuff because we will be on the road for about 15 days soon and I won't be able to cook for them like I do at home. If you don't like the fack that it is raw you can always cook it too! ;) It is however, heated to a temp that is supposed to be safe but not to a temp that is considered cooked. Kim |
Yep, it's cooked to a temp that is supposed to kill any bacteria that might have been there. It's dehydrated food, so I believe you have to add water to it before you feed it. LoveMyGirlz, I know what you mean LOL I've also been meaning to purchase a good dog food cookbook but haven't done it yet! There are wonderful recipes online though...Good luck! |
