Switching to Canidae, need advice please. Ok, so Lexie's daddy and I have decided to make the switch to Canidae All Life Stages. She's now on a dry kibble, moist mix and we keep dry kibble out for her. How should we make the switch to Canidae? Should we do the 1-2 week weaning thing, or what would you all suggest? Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Thank you in advance :) |
I would make tha change gradually, unless she is on one of the foods that is on the recall list. If that's the case, I'd switch her over to plain boiled rice and start mixing the Canidae in ,switch the food gradually, over a period of a week or so. Start with a mixture of 15% new and 85% old and feed that for a few days, then change it to 25% new and 75% old and feed that for two days or so then step it up to 50-50, and finally end up with a combo of 75% new, 25% old. If your pup seems to be having digestive problems, i.e diarahea, take it back a step and do the transition even more slowly, take your time, the key is to get his/her body used to this new food and help it to adjust gradually. If your pup is used to having wet food as well, Canidae also makes a great canned food that is available at some local pet supply stores. Hope this helps, PM me if you have any questions! :) |
Thank you so much. What you described is what I had planned, but wasn't 100% sure if there was a better way. She's not on a recalled food, I'm just wanting to improve the quality of her diet. She's on Iams smart puppy for toy breeds and I see it's not very good. Thank you again so much, you're awesome. |

I agree with the gradual switch but, my girls would pick out the Canidae and not even touch their old food...so I stopped mixing it and they did fine..I also feed canned Canidae...just a bit though....A can usually lasts me more than a week. |
i'm not sure what you are feeding now.. but if it is a less than great food you can expect a little soft stool... her body is going to be trying to get rid of the bad stuff while the good stuff is coming in... so it is normal.. when i switched layla over from a bad food to a good food she just picked out all the new stuff... i still kept her old stuff in there and she would eventually eat it but she really loved her new stuff and her tummy didn't seem to mind the switch at all. Good Job switching to a GREAT food!! |
I generally use the "gradual" method too. However, the dogs don't play by the rules. They pick out what they want to eat and leave the rest. The last switch I made was almost 2 years ago to Canidae -- I have no plans to change foods again. |
I also wanted to do the "gradual" change, but mine picked out the Canidae and Artemis and left their old food. So the change didn't end up happening so "gradually." |

Canidae is an AWESOME food! One of the best if not the best one on the market in my opinion. You made a great choice!   |
I'd love to get Lexie off the canned food altogether. I'm using Authority lamb & rice now which contains no wheat gluten but it's just so incredibly scary right now with the recalls. Last summer I had to put down my beloved collie, Cheyenne, due to chronic renal failure and I simply CANNOT go through that again. Thank you all so much for the advice and suggestions. I'll definitely try a gradual switch and see how she does. :) I'm excited to see if there will be a change after eating Canidae for a while. She's super healthy now but I have noticed some paw licking and very runny eyes some days. I don't know if it's from being outside or the food. We shall see! |
