Do you not have an ER clinic near your area? My vet suggested we take our little girl to the ER overnight so that someone would be there to moniter her. Otherwise, if she'd stayed at our vet, no one would have been with her. I'm glad we did have her at the ER because she was in pretty bad shape right after and I can't imagine leaving her somewhere all alone. The ER vet gave her two injections of pain meds overnight and they took her out to go pee and poo (which she didn't do). We picked her up very early the next morning and she just laid her little head on my chest and whimpered all the way home. We gave her sugar water with a syringe since she was too out of it to walk into the kitchen and get her water, and she hadn't had anything to drink all night, not to mention the night before she went into the vet other than what they gave her through the I.V. She shivered a lot and our vet said that was a sign of pain, so we did give her the pain pills. Anyway, I'd see if your vet will let you take her if you take her to the ER vet overnight. Your vet can call ahead and let them know you are coming and send over the report and instructions ahead of time. |
Mac (I had to wait until he was 1 for other health issues, but he is tiny, under 3lbs now) one testicle was not desended so he had to stay over night, the benefit I had was my female, Mellie was 7 months also under 3 lbs was spayed at the same time. They spent the night, in the same cage but my vet is 24 so someone was with them. They came home the next day just fine, maybe a little tired. I do agree that I wouldn't leave them unattended over night. Maybe there is another vet in you area that is 24hrs. |

No ER in my area :( The animal hospital (vet) we go has a vet on call, but he doesn't actually go there unless there's an emergency being called in :( I REALLY don't like the idea of her being alone. |
Spaying tinies Gracie was spayed at 9 mos. but was still very tiny (which is why at 6 mos. the vet suggested we wait another 3 mos.--she still hadn't gone into heat yet at 9 mos.). She weighed less than 3 lbs. but she did great. In our area the vets won't do any type of surgery without pre-op bloodwork. I dropped Gracie off at 7 a.m. for her surgery--the vet called me at 10:00 and said she had done great, and I picked her up at 5:00. She was a bit sleepy but the next day I could hardly keep her quiet. |
I know this must be so scary having such a wee one. Def. spend the extra money and get pre tests done as someone else has suggested. |

I feel your pain. Marcel will only be about 2.5 as an adult - and I am so scared to get him fixed. I would really talk to the vet and staff about how many tinies they've done, whether they've encountered unique complications from tinies, how comfortable they are leaving her alone overnight. IF they indeed are comfy w/ tinies and HAVE done plenty of tiny surgeries, they should welcome these questions. You could always have her spayed somewhere where someone is there overnight. I would. If something did go wrong over night, it could go wrong very quickly for any dog post-surgery, but esp. a tiny. |
I have to say that I am in the same boat as you "PuppyLovinNurse" . My Missy turns six months at the end of April and I know that it is said that they should be spayed soon, but I just can't make the call. Missy is 4.7 lbs, and surely she is healthy and large enough to have the surgery, but I can't bear to think of her in any pain as well as I can't help thinking that once it's done it can't be undone. I know exactly how you feel. Quote:

I understand the nerves. Riley is 6 mo old and (at last visit) was 2.4 lbs. I am SO afraid of her spay surgery. Right now we are waiting for her teeth, but I know the day will soon come. She's already had her pre-op blood work which came out fine. Our vet wants patients dropped off the night before with surgery first thing in the morning. Then, as long as everything goes okay, they are allowed to go home at the end of the day. I'm going to work it out so I can just drop Riley off early the morning of her surgery. There's no way I can take her being alone the night before, especially when she's never been separated from me. I know so many people have put their tinies through the operation so it helps to hear that things went fine. I'm still a nervous wreck, though!! Hey... let's all schedule our babies for the same day then we can all go crazy together. Heehee. Can you imagine? Admin would sign on the next evening with 1,458,993 new posts! |

Still haven't made the call...she JUST started losing teeth. She lost 2 yesterday & another today, so I'll just wait it out until I know for sure she doesn't need her teeth done too. Jeez...then I'll really be a wreck. Hopefully it won't take too long... |
My Nicky was just spayed a few weeks ago on a Friday. She is 7 months old and weighs 3.5 lbs, so she is pretty tiny. Well, things went fabulously. She was already trying to run around and jump off of the bed that evening. I of course had to put her in her kennel to make sure she didn't hurt herself. She took it a little easy over the weekend and by Monday she was about at full force. You little one is going to be just fine! I am curious to know why she must stay overnight? |

why do they want the patients dropped off the night before? that's totally unnecessary and probably is only convienent to them. There is no medical reason for that. I wouldn't do it. i agree that you should try to taker her in the morning of, no matter how early they start. |
No way! You shouldn't have to drop her off the night before...That's just silly. |
My Vet told me I would have to leave her overnight... I said "no".. no way I would leave her after an operation, overnight in a strange place. If she would have insisted I would have gone to another Vet. Luckily, she agreed to do her first so I could pick her up later that evening, so she went in at 9:00 am and I picked her up at 6:00 pm. |

My Murphie is getting spayed as I type this... I totally understand the nervous part. I am waiting on a phone call to say it is all finished. I walked out of the vets office with tears in my eyes. I told myself to shake it off...she will be fine. She has to spend the night... Good Luck with spaying your pup....I'm sure everything will turn out fine. |
I asked my vet the other day about spaying my almost 5 month old Mia. He actually suggested that I let her go thru her first heat, saying that it is easier to do on the smaller dogs after that. As she is also on the smaller size, 2.50 lbs. so I'm thinking waiting until she is full grown. Which I'm sure after one heat cycle she will be as big as she is going to get. |
Hi, my little girl Princess Pia is very tiny. She didn't get spayed under a year because of her size. However, around 14 months and only weighing around 1.8 we took her to be spayed. Pia came through the surgery fine but it was after the surgery when my little girl almost died. PLEASE do NOT let your little baby alone!!! I don't believe any dog after surgery should be left alone regardless of their size. I'm not trying to scare you but my Pia got very sick after surgery. I do however blame most of her problems on the vet (I no longer see) She came home the same day and wasn't herself but I expected that. However, the next morning she became very sick. Started to throw up and then got diarrhea. I took her to the vet and they gave her a shot and said she'd be fine in a day. Well, a few hours later my little girl went into shock. Thank goodness we have an ER 30 min away (which we got there in 10 min and thank God we all lived through that trip) The ER vet on call was absolutely wonderful and was seriously disturbed that they let her go home to begin with. She told us with Pia's size that a medical professional should have been watching her very closely all night. She also told me that since Pia is so tiny that keeping her on Iv's for even two days was better safe then sorry. By the time we got to the ER, Pia's veins had collapsed and putting a tube in her trachea was her only option. To sum the story up, my little girl went to the NEW Vet's actual office during the day and back to the ER for the night. This went on for almost 10 days. Even when Pia came home the trachea tube stayed in for several days. My little girl got sick the next day but it could have happened before that. For this reason leaving your baby alone is a bad idea. Please take your little one to an ER if possible or take the baby home with you and watch it closely for the next several days. If you don't have an ER around then ask the vet for an emergency number to call just incase something happenes through the night. I'm not trying to scare you but I do want you to be prepared for the worse. If my first vet would have put Pia on an IV when I took her back in, she probably would never have went through what she did. Dehydration caused everything to go wrong. THAT VET REALLY MESSED UP  and almost cost me my baby's life. I hope and pray no'one ever has to go through what we did. A simple spay turned into a nightmare and has caused me to be so overprotective and paranoid about Pia. She is a very healthy little girl and the new vet calls her a miracle baby. No'one thought she would make it but she's a fiesty little fighter ;) I hope and pray everything goes well with your baby. If you have any questions about anything, please fell free to PM me :) |

Thank you so much! I will insist that she comes home with me, or we'll be going somewhere else. The problem is, there isn't really anywhere else to go. We live in a fairly small city (pop: 45,000) and the vet we go to is the only one in the city. We are about 1 1/2 hours away from Ottawa (pop: 800,000) so I suppose if we HAD to we could go there & just wait for her to be done. But I'm sure it would cost 10x more. At the vet we go to, it costs $200. Thanks again, everyone!!! |

spaying Just to throw my 2 cents worth, Princess was 11 months old when we had her spayed 3 weeks ago. She was 2 1/2 lbs. She did fine through the surgery. My vet insisted on the CBC to make sure she could handle the anesthetic first. She was microchipped, spayed and had her dental work done (5 extractions). He insisted that she either go home with me to keep an eye on or he was going to take her home with him. I  my vet!! We had a problem afterwards with the stitches sticking Princess when she would walk but she is good as new now and the little 1/2" scar is hardly visable. I would highly recommend waiting until you can get as much done while they are out as possible. Can you talk to the breeder and just tell her that you are going to have Chloe done but want to wait until she weighs more? Maybe she will be understanding since she is so tiny. I have also heard that it is healthier to have the spaying done BEFORE they ever go into heat. I think the tinier dogs don't go into heat as soon as the bigger ones too. I had Angel spayed at 10 1/2 months old. Neither of them was even thinking about going into heat yet. i was glad to have their dental work and microchipping all done at the same time. I would never have a dog chipped while they were awake. it REALLY hurts them as i have seen it done to a lot of dogs and they scream...even super big dogs. the needle is HUGE to insert that grain of rice, which is pretty large if you think about it. Best of luck on your decision. I will be sending prayers for a successful spaying for your baby girl. Please keep us posted on what you decide to do. ....Linda |

My little Bailey is 2.6 lbs at the moment (at 7 months) and I have not had her spayed yet as I think she is still too little! She is yet to go on heat (vet said that anywhere between 6 and 12 months for 1st heat is normal) and I am planning to let her get to at least 3 (hopefully 3.5lbs) before I get her spayed. I did get her brother Cooper done 3 weeks ago as he is bigger at almost 6lbs...he came through really well and came home that afternoon |

Thanks so much! I've decided to wait until her teeth come out so I know if she'll need any extracted. They've just started falling out like CRAZY! So hopefully we'll at least know soon. I've also decided that I will definitely get the pre-op blood work done, just in case. I work in health care so I know how quickly something could go wrong and don't want to risk. I guess my medical knowledge probably doesn't help the worrying situation, either  Also, I'm going to tell the vet that if she can't come home she's not getting it done by him. End of story. I was really uneasy with that and since reading everyone's posts on here there is no way she's staying alone. It's a business so I'm sure he won't want to give up the $300+. Thanks, again :) |
