New vaccine.. There might already be a thread about this...BUT..did any of you guys hear about the new vaccine by Pfizer, it is to prevent the bacteria from growing on dogs teeth..this in turn will prevent periodontal disease..It is $25 each time...it has to be given a total of two times, three weeks apart. It seems kind of interesting..I suppose just one more preventative measure to keep the teeth clean. It might be something to look into considering that teeth are a major problem in basically all dogs over the age of three.. hmm..dunno....:animal-pa |

I am not sure..my vet gave me the leaflet on it..it is fairly new. A lot of vets aren't pushing it yet..my mom was the one who told me because she has two yorkies and the very recommended it to her..so I asked my vet about it for Brookie and he said they have it, so he gave me a leaflet and sent me on my way..told me if I was interested we could make an appointment. |
More medication. :mad: I give mine nice femur bones to chew on. They have strong white teeth, it's all natural and cheap. |
Yeah..more medication :( That is kind of why I was wondering if anyone heard of it. It is interesting the medication dogs are given isn't it? Brooke does not do well with normal distemper vaccines, etc. She generally has mild reactions that result in her being given allergy medicine to stop further reaction. I don't necessarily plan on getting her this vaccine...just wondering if any other vets had mentioned the idea to anyone else... |
I just came across this thread and wanted to bump it up. Has anyone ever gotten this vaccine for their dog? My puppy is about 6 months old and the vet mentions it almost everytime we go in, since yorkies are prone to bad teeth, etc. |
No, haven't heard of it..I give mine greenies, and actually the yorkie that is almost 5, the vet said her teeth were in really good shape for being her age and her breed..The shih tzu is almost 10, and her teeth are still in good shape, although, she does need them brushed..actually, all of the dogs I've ever had always have had good teeth(knock on wood)..even the golden retriever we had put down when she was 18, still had all her teeth, and never had a brushing.. |
I love the thought that this could work but I inquired and it is a 2 shot deal I believe at first and it is very painful. I am still mulling it over and really would like to see a little history on this before I make a final decision. |
When I talked to my vet about it, she said you would still need to do the cleanings even with the vaccine. That's why I decided against it, if getting the shot could do away with the cleanings then it would be worth it for me. |
I haven't heard of that one. A lot of times the pet drug companies come and talk to us at school about them when they are releasing something new....maybe we'll hear about it when we get back from Christmas Break. Interesting concept for a vaccine...I don't see how it would be effective though:confused: How in the world would a vaccine stop tarter buildup? The only way to do that is to keep the teeth clean. I wouldn't give a vaccine like that to my dog...seems unnecessary and I don't see it making much difference. I'll continue to feed raw and brush Lacy's teeth |
Warning Someone on another yorkie list I am on got it for their two yorkies and they had a bad reaction to it and she nearly lost them. They were in the hospital for at least a week or two. It was very scary! I don't think I would chance it myself. |

immunity against bacteria is not always a good thing. This can make super bacteria. Then we'll need even stronger drugs to battle these. Its like antibacterial soap. bacteria will ALWAYS find a way to flourish and if we keep using mild antibacterial things we're just going to make stronger bacteria. |
It's actually been available for about a year. We are lucky enough to have a vet on the Maltese forum I belong to and she tells us about new things. She feels it's safe and inoculated her own dogs. |
I don't think I would want to give them anymore shots then they already get. Especially reading that it has resulted in some bad reactions. Will just keep using our kibble, and bones to help clean their teeth. |

Thanks for posting those links, they were interesting articles! I think it is definitely something that deserves attention if it can help prevent a disease that can lead to a lot of other health problems. As far as bad reactions to it, can't the same be said for any vaccine? All dogs react differently to them it seems like. |
I don't like New medications of any type. There are too much chances that it will do more harm than good until time has passed to make sure there are as little life threatening side effects. Jazzie got an injectable heartworm treatment and it caused a tumor in the injection site that needed to be sugically removed. The pharmacutical company paid for the surgery and the FDA recalled the vaccine after many dogs died from it! Never again will I use any New or Unproven medications for my babies or myself! |

I would never get it. It is brand new and Pfizer doesn't even kow the side effects yet. It also could have to be giving often. I wouldn't be putting more drugs into these dog's systems. I prefer Oravet which is a wax/plaque barrier that is non-toxic. |
