Purina Pro Plan i took Walker to the vet friday and he said that he was close to having an ear infection because his ears were really red. he said that he thinks its the food. he was on Canidae which he hadn't heard of and gave me a bag of Pro Plan. i looked at the ingredients and they seem pretty good. i was just wondering if anyone feeds their babies this stuff and how you like it. |
If it were me, I would not feed Purina under any circumstances - but that's me. GO here and read about Purina: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...at=all&ppuser= Canidae, btw, is EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!! |
Hi, I feed Holly Purina Pro Plan for Small Breed Puppies. I've never had any problems at all and when I took her to the vet for a check up and her Rabies Vaccine he said she was doing excellent. I guess every puppy is different and I didn't read the reviews on the link provided because the food I use was not listed. I guess see how it goes and if you see your baby is not responding well to it, call your vet and ask if he suggests something else. I AM going to try Canidae since Holly's Easter Basket contained a small bag of kibble and some cans of Canidae. We'll see how it goes, but if it wasn't for receiving the free food in her easter basket, I probably would continue to buy the Pro Plan. Let me know how it goes. |

Purina is not a high quality food...Vets for some reason are always recommending low quality foods...I don't understand! Either Purina or Hill's... |
trust me i wasn't jumping for joy! well if he is allergic to the canidae i need something else to give him.... any suggestions? |
Hmmm, perhaps Timberwolf or Wellness? California Natural? |
I personally do not trust Purina as a company to feed my dog, and wouldn't feed their food to either of my pups. I seriously doubt your babies problem is quality of food if you are feeding Canidae. It is one of the highest quality organic foods on the market. Many vets haven't heard of it because it isn't a huge massive marketing company like many others that are out there. I've had both of mine on it for some time now and I have only seen good things come from it  Perhaps you could try switching the flavor, they have three different kinds, maybe if he is allergic to a particular protien source it could be causing other problems to flare up. I know their Lamb formula is great for those that have food allergies. Hope everything works out for your baby! |
If he has allergies, you might try Natural Balance Duck & Potato or Venison & Brown Rice...I'll look up a few more, but this will give you a good start |
koolbreeze, go to www.dogfoodanalysis.com and look at all the 4 and 5 star foods....While you're looking through those, look for foods that have very FEW ingredients...These are usually good for allergies. Good luck! I have heard wonderful things about the NB Duck and Potato for allergies. |
ONE OF MY DOGS HAS SERIOUS ALLERGIES TO EVERYTHING I SWEAR, SO I FEED ALL OF MY DOGS EITHER SOLID GOLD OR THE ALLERGY FREE FORMULA NATURAL BALANCE-DUCK AND POTATO OR VENISON AND BROWN RICE. THEY WORK SO WELL, MY DOGS LOVE THEM. THEY ARE FREE OF FILLER AND PRESERVATIVES. MY LITTLE ONES COATS ARE AWESOME AFTER I SWITCHED TO THESE FOODS! |
Also, I Checked On That Dog Food Analysis And Solid Gold Is 5 Star Dog Food And Natural Balance Is A 4 Star, Pretty Good! |
So do you guys think that my puppy is at risk for something since she eats Pro Plan? I have to admit that ever since I joined this website, I have bought a lot of things that I never imagined ever buying for a puppy.LOL.. Either way, like I said before, I wouldn't intentionally hurt my puppy. I just wanted to know if I should just start feeding her the Canidae now and throw out the rest even though she's doing just fine. |
Great. I just read the reviews and I went from feeding Holly a 5 star food to feeding her a 2 star. The breeder gave me Premium Edge Puppy Formula and I still have some. But I have been mixing it with the Pro Plan because I couldn't find it anywhere. I guess I will order it online. It's in the same category as Canidae so I should be okay right? What do you guys think. Should I just feed her the Premium?(SIGH) I'm so confused. |
I have used ProPlan for 3 years with Cody. Never any ill effects. HOWEVER, since the recall on all the foods I did switch to Canidae and Merrick brands. I personally do not trust any food sold in stores anymore. But again I never had any problems with Cody on ProPlan. I honestly don't think a food can cause and ear infection though. Isn't it a type of bacteria that causes ear infections because they are treatable with antibiotics? But again I have NO idea cause I am not a VET :D I also had no idea that ProPlan was not a good food until I found YT. |
If you read the reviews, you'll notice that many of the 1,2, and 3 star foods have BHT, BHA, ethoxyquin which are all very bad for dogs. Ethoxyquin is a known carcinogen that is banned from human foods...Why is it allowed to go into dog foods? Ya know? Also, the lower graded foods have lots of fillers, by-products, and things like that. That's why we try to stay in the 4 and 5 star foods. |
I alternate Gracie between the canned ProPlan puppy formula and Merricks. I have never fed her the ProPlan dry food. It is high quality food, not like the grocery store Purina products. |

thanks ya'll. as i said before about the Pro Plan. it doesn't have all the dyes and by products in the ingredients. in fact it doesn't have anything i can't pronounce or wouldn't eat myself. but i think i will look into something else anyway. but Walkers ears are really red and were not that way when i got him. he said that when they are allergic to something that they eat their ears turn pink/red... red meaning bad. has anyone heard of this???? |

Many vets are not knowledgeable about healthy dog foods. I would just be cautious esp. if the vet is selling the ProPlan at his practice. I dunno....what else WOULD he say when you called, you know what I mean? I'd have been surprised if he said "ah, you know, I am wrong - I do recommend a crappy food. I take back my recommendation." I don't mean to preach - whatever you're comfortable with is what matters. Just know that there are some great resources to do some research on your own and make your own conclusions. Best, Ann |
Thanks Ann, he doesn't sell it there. I actually got it at Petsmart. And I did look up all the ingredients. I think I will just finish this bag maybe (I don't want to throw it away) and then use the Canidae my mom sent in Holly's Basket. IF she likes it then BINGO, we've got her food. But I think that the one that I had originally given her, the Premium Edge Puppy Formula, was one star more than that and it's less expensive. I do love my baby and I think I will change just because I've heard so many good things about these other foods. I still don't believe my Holly is in danger, but I think that you guys know first hand since you have Yorkies and he doesn't.:p Thanks, LAURA |
Well, Canidae is a "clean" food that contains no problematic ingredients that normally cause allergic reactions like ear infections. Is is possible that your baby got water in her ear during a bath or something? That will DEFINATELY cause an infection. You can get some ear cleaner from the vet that has a drying agent in it and put it in her ears after her baths to dry up all the excess water. If she is still getting ear infections after that, then I would suggest switching foods but NOT to Purina. You need to get a food that is free of CORN, GLUTENS (wheat, rye, barley), DAIRY, and SOY, which Canidae is which is why I am surprised your vet said it was her food. If a food switch IS necessary, I would switch to Natural Balance either Duck & Potato or Sweet Potato & Fish. But Canidae is such an excellent food that I would not switch unless you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that the food is causing her ear infections...which I doubt it is. |
good point! i'm so confused!! you would think the vet would know! i think i'm just gonna stick to the canidae. i checked his ears and they are no longer red or pink. so i don't know! i think i'll get something thing for his ears in case i get water in them. thanks! |
