Treats Hi all, I am new this "yorkie" life. We got Moose 12/06. He was 7 months 4/1/07. We will be starting obedience training 4/14/07. The instructor sent a note to us to make sure we bring a big bag of treats. Any suggestions what I should take as a treat?? We haven't given him any dog treats yet. I have a co-worker who has 2 yorkies and she said to take baby carrots. What do you all think? |
I have my lab in obedience training now and I would suggest getting a treat that is easy to chew. Go to the pet store and they usually have small, chewy treats that are specifically called "training treats." You could also try cutting up hot dogs into 4ths (don't cut them in circles bc it could cause them to choke), you could use tiny bits of boiled chicken, crumbles of cheese....just go with something that is soft and easy to chew! Good luck with training class!!! |
cheerios or cheese |
Mine go nuts for diced apples as treats. |
Hurray.... Thanks for the ideas. I was sad..... :+( No one had responded to my post. My first post and no one wanted to talk or help me. Thanks again. |
Cherios or freeze dried liver treats |
I have bought several treats for training. Then read about Cheerios for treats on YT....Gordon will now do any command for a Cheerio. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your baby :) I would sometimes use little pieces of turkey cut up or chicken for treats. Mine have never really liked cheerios and it's nice to have something small and easy to chew fast :) Good Luck at training |
My doggies love the yogurt drops, from petsmart. |
cheerios, pieces of apple...Everyone has given good suggestions :) |
The idea for training is that the treat needs to be chewed and swallowed quickly....so I cut up even the smallest treats into even smaller bits. Tia's favorites include freeze dried liver snaps, and some soft chews (i think the brand is Advantage...there are two shapes in the bag....bone shape and footbal shape). I have even used samples of kibble that the trainer and vet have given me (i also cut these into smaller bits). At home Tia loves baby carrots...I suppose you could chop these down too. |
