Going into heat Hello--my 7-month old girl hasn't gone into her first heat yet. Any advice on what symptoms to look for? I've heard some things about some swelling, changes in behavior, etc... but I am still pretty clueless about what to do as I've only had boys before  . Any recommendations on what panty/diaper products to use for when she starts having her period? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
Just as humans, our female babies are different as well. Some can go into heat as early as 6 months others to 1 yr or longer. Just depends. I currently have a 9 month old who just went into heat. Signs you will notice are licking of the area, swelling, and a blood discharge. Most keep themselves quite clean. I don't diaper mine, but I find spots on their blankets. Your males will also give you a clue . Smelling her and they all start acting a little "fruity" :) |

I have one female that's on a 6 month cycle, one female that is a year old and I have yet to see a heat cycle, and two females on an 8 month cycle. Sooo... they are all different. The female on the 6 mo. cycle doesn't even bleed, but my 'fixed' male just starts loving her to pieces when he normally doesn't have a lot to do with her. :D The other two bleed a very tiny bit and uaually keep themselves clean. One of my females had a false pregnancy on her first heat, but I knew it was false, as we didn't breed her. She started swelling like she was producing milk and even got big. It lasted about 3 mos! But she has normal heats now. Anyway... just keep an eye on her. It's different for everyone. And 'spotting' is usually the first sign. She'll do that for several days and then the 'heat' starts. That usually will last about 1 week. They can get a little aggressive also, so if she starts acting different, that's probably a good sign. I'm sure others have other things you can look for. |
I just noticed--Tifa got her first period yesterday! Kiba was acting very strangely... almost like he didn't want to be near her. I thought it's usually the other way around? |
If you do not want a pregnancy, you need to keep them separated with a solid door at all times. A diaper, cage or x-pen will not stop them from tying and pregnancies have been known to happen through all of these barriers. You need to keep them separated for several weeks as females are in heat for about 21 days. I am no expert but am sure the more experienced breeders and members will post to tell you for sure. How old are your dogs and how much do they weigh....? |

I couldnt agree more with you. Our female had her first litter back in June 2006 and when she went into heat again we were going to let her rest and not breed her until the heat after. We thought keeping the diaper on her at all times would help, but 2 months and 5 puppies later here we are. I love all the puppies and wouldnt have changed a thing, I was just more worried about my female becoming pregnant so soon after her first litter. If you do not have a male around there shouldnt be too much of a problem. I just keep a diaper with a pantyliner on the girls so I dont get little red spots everywhere. |
