is it bad for your yorkie to exercise..... daily? I take my babies to the park daily and well it is sunny and hot out there. I read all the time that they do not require lots of exercise but is it bad?? just curious. Thanks. |
Oh, heavens no. It is not bad to exercise your Yorkies. It always bugs me when the books say they don't need outside exercise. I suppose they don't if you toss the ball for them for an hour a day indoors, but they sure do appreciate outside walks. And a tired pooch means fewer potential behavioral problems. The only caution I would give you is if they are pups. Don't overexercise them while their muscles are still developing. And by overexercise, I mean hikes up mountains or long runs. Daily walks are just fine. But you do need to take pictures of these daily walks and post them. |

if it were not for my yorkies...i would not get any exercise. i could not count how many walks we take a day. even a neighbor asked me if they need potty time that often. well yes, they do. |
As long as you don't force them to keep exercising when they are tired, I can't imagine that exercise would ever be considered unhealthy for any living creature. |
I agree with what Jeanie said. They will let you know if they are too tired to walk. You should never force it on them. But if they're willing and excited, (and most times they are!), by all means give them plenty of walks. A tired yorkie is usually a cooperative yorkie. :) |

Sam loves to go outside and run like a wild man. he just looooves to go for walks so Im glad the excerise is good for them. Good for me 2! |
We take all of our babies to a big open desert behind our house and they all run and play off the leash so they get plenty of exercise. |
Yeah, they definitely need exercise. Especially when they have been in the house all day like Izzy. I just started taking him out daily when the weather warmed up. When I come home, we go outside and walk a couple of short blocks. When it was colder, I would take him out for a few minutes then back in...because we both hate the cold!:p |
Mine love their outside time. I think they would be bored without their playtime in the grass. I dont see how exercise is wrong, as long as they have plenty of water to drink while at play I let mine have fun in the sun!!! |
Mine love to walk and play outside! Taking them out is the only way I can get things done sometimes: I take them out for an hour walk or play at the park, then I get about 1.5 hours to myself as they sleep. I plan on starting to hike with mine. I'm going to ease them in to it though. Just as a person, they need to build up their endurance. I agree, if it weren't for my two, I would almost never get any exercise! They don't let me be lazy! :p |
We try to do a 20 min walk daily. I always take water with me and a collapsible doggie bowl. They let me know when they are tired. If they seem hot, I pat a little cool water on their belly, neck and back. My Daisy has a really thick, black coat and gets hot very quickly. |
Animals do not have a "need" to push themselves physically like athletes. They will exert themselves physically...but not for the purpose of building endurance/muscles, etc. With that said,...feel free to exercise your yorkie daily. It doesn't hurt and can only contribute to their health. |

We are always outside 6-7 times per day on walks. We have a backyard but I keep them leashed as my fence is a picket fence. They run around with my son and my big dog and play fetch. They let me know they are tired by heading for the stairs to go back inside. And then we head in. I also always keep a fresh bowl of water full when we are outside :) |
