Nemo does'nt like dry dog food!
 

Hi everyone, I am hoping that you all can make some suggestions as to what I should do about Nemo not wanting to eat dry dog food, which I know he needs to have apart of his diet,

When I first got him the breeder sent puppy chow-he would never eat
I tried Kibble-he only eats the soft pieces
Science diet hates it

I have heard of Royal Canine and also a food called Bill & Jack(I guess I am spelling it right)has anyone ever heard of this brand or know anything about it. I am just so concerned that he is not getting everything nutritionally that he needs as a puppy, he is a very picky eater also....

Don't fret about it too much. When we first brought Lexi home we were all upset because she didn't ever eat the dry dog food. To this day, 5 months later, she still doesn't like dry dog food - and we've tried them all. I asked the vet about it and he said not to worry as long as she is eating the wet food, drinking and is playful and healthy, which she is. I still leave it out once in a while to see if her tastes have changed and they have. Now she takes them out of the bowl one at a time and plays hockey with them but she still won't them. :rolleyes:

I see I am not alone, because that is exactly what nemo does to his dry dog food he throws it around like he is playing fetch with himself anyone who sees him doing it thinks it is so cute....he just will not eat it....

I give mine wet food 2x a day, morning and evening, and they have dry out all the time, it took them a month or so before they started to eat the dry, but now sometimes they won't touch the wet and will empty the dry! I've come to realize that they cycle in their eating habits, and I don't let it worry me any more, so long as they drink lots of water and are eating one of their foods! :)

Gale, I think picky eating is pretty much a "Yorkie" trait! :) It's hard to believe, but our vet was correct when she told us, "if they are hungry ... they WILL eat"!! Our breeder gave us a supply of the frozen BilJack when we got Toto and although it was frozen and packed on ice, when I opened it I almost threw up! It has a terrible smell and Toto wouldn't touch it even though it was what she was accustomed to. I discovered the Natural Balance which comes in a roll similar to "summer sausage", and after Dr. Lucy looked it over and approved, we started giving Toto that, chopped in tiny pieces .... she still has days when she won't even touch it, but we also keep the Royal Canin Yorkshire 28 down all the time and indeed, when she is hungry, she eats!! :rolleyes: Toto also plays with her food and tosses it around, sometimes goes about her playing and then later eats it ... she is too funny ... her little expression looks like "oh, I meant to eat that"!! ;) We also give her the vet formula NutriCal to make sure she gets all the nutrients that she might miss on her "picky days".
BTW ... isn't it amazing how high they can toss things? Toto had a golf ball in with her toys [no idea how it got there] and since it was too large for her little mouth, she would sometimes roll it around ... until one day she had the thing out and bounced it off the wall about 2 feet above her head!! It barely missed her and as soon as she wasn't looking, her "Wilson" disappeared!!! No more golf balls for her!! :D

Jumping
 

I have a question for everyone out there about jumping. My Lexi never stops jumping up and down off the furniture. I've tried to stop her but it's an impossible task. The only way for me to stop her would be to crate her and I won't do that all day. She needs to 'celebrate'. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem?

Nemo is so funny when he is playing with his dry dog food, I was just wonder which royal canin do I get the one for puppies that has a daschund on the bag or the one with the yorkie I know that one says 10month and up. Right now nemo is dancing around with one of my son's dirty socks(he does'nt like the clean ones)he sneaks in my son's room and stills them one time i looked in his kennel and he had five of my son's socks in there. Anyway i think I am going to try the royal canine..... :)

Hi Chester plays with his food all the time.. He eats when he feels like it, but he does eat eventually. We had him other puppy food when we first got him and he did not eat it at all. So we quickly swiched to Iams he did not like that either.. then we found Royal Canin the one with the yorkie picture on it. He loves it.. That is all he will eat.. even treats he is not the happy about them.
So we have to use his food or a green bone for teats.

Give it a try...
Normally when we see that chester has not eaten for the day.. we put his food in his creat and say go eat.. we walk away and let him eat... other wise he will play all day and night and not eat a thing... :rolleyes:

Gale, the Royal Canin Yorkshire 28 is especially formulated for the Yorkies. It's the only dry food so far that Toto will eat! :rolleyes: She is such a picky eater!!!
ygeorge, our "Dr. Lucy" told us the first day we had Toto to give her Honeycomb cereal as treats! They love the taste and we use it when she is a "good girl" ... potty, tricks or just any "good" action! She is so small and since the vet said to only give her about six or so a day, we break it either into halves or quarters! It also gives her that extra sugar! ;)

I boil some chicken and cut it up in tiny pieces and add it to Tishs dry food. I have no problem with her eating then. She also likes to carry her food bowl around and makes a trail of food, then she follows her food trail and eats it.

I gave Boomer and Karma some boiled chicken the other night and they had diarrhea for 2 days afterwards - I think I either gave them too much of it, or maybe they are too young to be having stuff like that in their diets - any thoughts?

Hmm, was it salty at all karmaboomer? Maybe you need to ease them into it, just a bit at first, then more and more later on, but if they had bad diarrhea, perhaps stay away from chicken for a bit... We started Yoda on chicken after he was maybe 9 months or so...

Will Nemo eat canned or wet food?? You might try that first to see if he'll like it.

When we got Ranger the breeder was feeding him Mighty Dog chicken and rice, she told us that he got sick eating anything else :confused: . So that's what we fed him for about a week before I went and bought Science Diet Puppy chicken and rice. I added about two tablespoons to his Mighty Dog and he didn't even seem to notice, nor did he get sick. Over a week I had switched him to the Science Diet and he had no problems. After a month I bought Science Diet Puppy dry food and slowly began adding that to his wet food. Two weeks later he was eating the dry food by itself and wasn't being picky.

I'd also talk to your vet; sometimes they can give you free samples of different foods that are good for your puppy. Good Luck!!

I also have this problem with Dolce....she is like a little Evil Kneivel. She is not afraid to jump off of anything!! She is only 2 lbs. 7 oz. and has NO FEAR!! We have a sectional in our den that is pretty high, well we also have a small little fold out "couch" for my nephew that he lays on when he is watching TV. Well wouldnt ya know that Dolce climbed up on that, then climbed onto the end table and jumped onto the couch (all of these are within a few inches of each other), but I couldnt believe it!! She is VERY smart and when she wants to do something she gets it done! She can also go up and down the stairs now which terrifies me because i am afraid she will fall downt he whole flight. My boyfriend yells at me because he thinks i baby her too much and am overprotective, but hey, she IS my baby!! She has hurt herself being so brave though....she jumped off my boyfriends lap to the floor and sprained her leg. SHe was ok though, brought her to the vet, and everything was fine. Anyway, I guess we just have to watch them closely and make sure they dont decide to jump off anything too high....Im glad to know my Dolce isnt the only daredevil out there!!

Yes, Yorkies are high jumpers for sure! Yoda's sprained his ankle a few times too just jumping and running around the corner too fast. To prevent problems in old age, try to limit their jumping, or at least make sure they don't jump onto hardwood floors, as carpet can cushion their land a bit.

Hello all!

Breeder I got Mia from gave them all Captain Crunch Peanut Butter cereal for treats. Mia won't TOUCH them now. My lab eats "biscuits" so I found T shaped "training" biscuits in kind of a bandaid box. We break them each into about 4 pieces. A crumb thrills her to pieces.

She is almost weaned off her gatorade, too.

Wow Gatorade? Does she get all hyper from that? Only sweets Yoda gets really is a lick or two of ice cream.

Didn't know you could give them Gatorade. We only give Toto the Honeycomb for treats [about 6 whole pieces in a day] ... when it's divided she gets anywhere from 15 to 24 little pieces! She just loves that tiny little bit of sweet! ;)

When my bf puppy was sick and throwing up, our vet recommended gatorade to make sure he didn't dehydrate. I guess you can also offer as a treat, but in small quantities of course. In Brazil, instead of gatorade the vets recomend coconut water...We can also make homemade ice cream using natural fruit juices, its specially good in the summer or for teething puppies.

Sounds yummy, I've just never heard of Gatorade for dogs before, but today, another dog friend said he gives his pug Gatorade as well. :)

The theory behind the gatorade (and we give fruit punch flavor) is that everyones water supply, even bottled water, tastes different. This way when puppies go to new homes, they will drink. Also they said that puppies when stressed or playing will sometimes forget to eat, but won't forget to drink and the gatorade helps keep the sugar levels up and hydrated.

When we got her off the plane - Miami to NM was about 6.5 hours - her carrier had a hamster type bottle of gatorade attached. We were told to give her some gatorade immediately with a syringe and then some nutrical and she immediately perked up. Today is her first day with pure water and we've had her 3 wks yesterday.

I will miss her very pink tongue and fruity kisses.

But you also have to be carefull with the amouts of sugar offered to yorkie. Specially puppies, i know people that because they always fed their dogs with "people food" without even caring about the dog's needs (specially the excess of sugar during years) and the dogs became diabetic. That's why we should always, always be carefull and follow orientation of our vets. The net is full of information that we donnou where it came from and who came up with it.

Charlie eats dry food and can not eat wet food it makes him have the squirts. I would try and see if you can't find some softer dry food.
