Too many treats! Healthy suggestions? Well, I am finally making some progress with training Percy :D Problems is, I realized today how many times I hand him a treat. Everytime he potties where he should, while we are working on leash walking, come, sit, stay....ugh....he is going to be a little butterball if I don't cut it out! He seems to be finally responding to the treat/praise combo, and whatever else I might be doing different (I'm not sure what, but whatever it is it is working) He is super picky about food and treats....hates yogurt, peanut butter, cottage cheese, only likes carrots sometimes, we have thrown away at least 5 boxes of tiny sized treats that he wont touch...he will eat cheese, but I don't know how much is good for them. I tried using kibble as a treat but he just turned his nose up and kept looking at me like "Um, excuse me Miss, there is supposed to be a real treat here now" But, I hate digging into the treat box every half hour. I am thinking only putting half of his normal serving in his bowl to make up for all the treats I give him during training, but don't know if this is healthy either. Any good training treat options that I might not be thinking of, or healthy ones. Or ideas about his daily feeding? |
Mine love apples, but cheese has alot of salt so I try to limit their cheese. Good luck with the successful trainning. |
Cheerios are good & small. As long as they get something for doing good, that's all they care about. I know everytime one pees on the paper they all come running for a treat. It happens so often 1 cheerio each. They like the yogurt flavored. |
Mine like green apples (peeled and cut up), yogurt, cheerios(Emma likes them, Miko doesn't), cottage cheese, cheese, bananas... |
So glad you posted this. I always think I'm giving to many treats also and forgot all about giving cherios or apples. ;) I'm definately going to try these:) |
I used to do this same mistake when lilo was younger. since we started obiediance training , our trainer told us just to give lilo tiny sizes of treats. I'm feeding her wellness pure rewards treats and before I used to break each treat in 4 smaller pieces but now I break it in 10-14 pieces ( they are size of small pea.) the idea behind giving treats is to give small amounts so the dog doesn't overfeed on them. |
OOOO, love those ideas! Thank you! Didn't know yorkies liked apples...will have to try that tomorrow....hopefully Picky Percy will approve. |
Dogs like bananas as well. I found this thread and used the recipe that this YT member posted. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...28#post1013528 Great recipe, and it has bananas in it. This sounds gross, but I even tasted them after I made them, and they were good! (I mean, I wouldn't serve them at the next ladies luncheon or anything, but they had a good flavor!:D ) Hope this helps!;) **By the way, this recipe makes a lot, so you might want to cut it in half, or freeze it. Just a side note!:D |
yup, my doggies think they are so slick by peeing a little to get a treat. so everytime they pee a little i give them a little. if they pee big i give them a bigger treat lol |
i think my babies are weird they love eating salads, bean sprouts, cucumbers, green beans...pretty much any kind of veggies..apples, pears, pinapples, strawberries, oranges, bananas, kiwi...;) |
Bengi gets small treat when he does his job. He gets tiny pieces of pupperoni, yorkie yummies, boiled chicken (he l.o.v.e.s chicken!), strawberries. |

I didnt know they could eat cheese...can they eat soybeans (edamame)? |
Pop a veggie burger in the toaster to thaw and give tiny pieces as rewards or treats. Careful with the dry cereal. Even though it isn't coated with sugar, they do have sugar in them. Some more than others, so do some cereal compairison before buying. |
