Nails question Guys, Rocky i 15 weeks old. Breeder said its Ok to cut nails. But I havent done it yet. Should I do it? Does it have to be done? I really don't like the process, it feels painful. Rocky doesnt show any signs of discomfort. |
If his nails need cut then you should cut them, you don't want to put it off. The longer he goes without his nails cut on a regular basis, the longer his nails will grow, the longer the quick will grow making it harder to cut the nails shorter and it also causes alot of discomfort and pain if the nails are allowed to get too long. Also it is best that he gets use to you cutting his nails from an early age. At his age he shoulden't need very much of his nail cut off, just the tips if that. As long as you don't cut the quick, it won't be painful to him at all. It is just like us cutting our fingernails. |
it's not hard to cut your babies nails...first you need to get kitty nail cutters since the doggie nail cutters will be to big for him..then you will need to get some styptic pads just in case you cut too deep this will stop the bleeding if you don't it will bleed like a water fountain. then you can trim just a bit off the tip if you do every week after you take him a bath the nails will be softer and easier for you to cut them. don't put off the longer it is the harder it is for your baby to walk on it. i hope that this makes sense..i hope that this help...:D |
I usually use a human nail cutter... :) It is not difficult.. save $10 :) |
It is so important to keep your dogs nails cut. If they grow too long it can affect the way they walk which can lead to knee, leg and/or back problems. If the dog allows you to cut them without a lot of drama then stand them on the table, lift a back leg cradle it gently and clip the tip of the nail. On a white colored nail you can see the quick - on black nails you'll notice the end has a whitish coloring and you will clip this area. Move to the other paws and reassuring the dog with slow movements and soft touch. If the dog isn't as keen to having their nails done I will put them in the bath, allow the water to soften the nail and while they are busy drinking or I'll put a squeek toy in the water to entertain them I then clip their nails. Most of the time I get the back ones done before they realize I did anything. Also having the hair wet allows you to see the nail much better. Good luck! |
You can even file them down......some of mine just hate their nails clipped...even though I begin when they're a week old and every 2 weeks there after....those sharp little needles push into mommy when they're nursing. It should be done no less than once a month, every 2 weeks is better, that way you only have to clip the tips. |
I Usually Do Harveys When He Has His Bath - As The Nail Is Softer And Easier To Cut. I Wrap Him In His Towel And He Is Really Good - Doesnt Try To Run Or Wriggle Away. |
