Petfood maker Royal Canin hit with lawsuit Has anybody else heard of this?? I only feed my dogs Royal Canin. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...0320/20070320/ Petfood maker Royal Canin hit with lawsuit Updated Tue. Mar. 20 2007 10:31 PM ET Canadian Press TORONTO -- A Canadian class action lawsuit has been filed against pet food maker Royal Canin Canada Co. on behalf of dog and cat owners claiming that certain products contain excessive amounts of vitamin D and have caused their pets to become sick or die. One of the lawyers handling the plaintiffs' case said the suit against Royal Canin has been in the works for months and is unrelated to the high-profile problems that have come to light at Menu Foods Income Fund (TSX:MEW.UN), a major North American pet food maker that announced last week it was recalling dozens of brands of "cuts and gravy" style products. In the United States, a Chicago woman sued Menu Foods on Tuesday, alleging the Canadian pet food manufacturer delayed announcing a recall of 60 million containers of dog and cat food despite knowing its products were contaminated and potentially deadly, the Associated Press reports. Menu said it had not seen the suit and had no comment. The suit against Royal Canin, filed Tuesday in the Ontario Superior Court, alleges the pet food maker -- a subsidiary of a French company -- either knew or should have known the levels of vitamin D were unsafe and could cause the animals to develop high levels of calcium in their blood, renal failure and other conditions. None of the allegations have yet to be tested in court. The Canadian lawsuit is seeking compensation for people who bought Royal Canin dog or cat food since Aug. 1, 2004. Joel Rochon, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said he wants the company cover the cost of veterinarian services related to the health problems, as well as the replacement cost of pets that have died, and reimburse the price of the food. The claim outlines at least 59 Royal Canin products that it says should be included in the refund. The lawsuit has been filed by law firms Rochon Genova LLP and Himelfarb Proszanski LLP. Rochon said the case has been in development for up to six months and is not directly related a pet food recall issued by Menu Foods but Rochon added that his firm has been retained for a case involving Menu. While a class action suit hasn't been filed in the Menu Foods case, "it looks like we're heading in that direction,'' Rochon said. Menu, which is based in the Toronto area, said Friday it was recalling some of its dog and cat food and conducting tests after receiving feedback that about 10 pets had suffered kidney damage after eating the firm's products. |
Were dogs getting sick on Royal Canin? My yorkie, Miko, eats one of their prescription diets for his liver...I'm going to have to just cook for my dogs...This is getting to be too much. |
You pay extra money to get better food and yet these horrible things continue to happen. Buddy was on Royal Canin 2yrs ago I am so happy I changed at that time. He really did not enjoy it much. You can only pray that what your paying for your getting inside the bag. |
It's really sad how all of this is going on. PETA sent me an e-mail yesterday saying how Menu Foods new that animals were getting sick since Feb 20! A whole friggin month! It's sad how they only want to make a profit, instead of caring for the well being of our babies. It makes me sick to my stomach. |
Just because a lawsuit is filed, it does not mean that the allegations are true. I too thought about a home cooked diet for Gracie. But then I realized that none of our food supply really can be trusted, even fresh meat and vegies. Look at the recalls for ecoli! And if you don't cook things well enough, Salmonella etc. Gracie has eaten Royal Canin tiny puppy from day one. Just yesterday, after reading the label, I decided to switch her to Merrick's. I don't think she has been harmed as her pre-spay blood work was fine. |
This is driving me crazy now what are we suppose to do. Royal csanin is the only food sassy will eat. i wonder if it is true. I would guess that the lawyers would have had the food tested before they went forward with the law suit what does everyone else think. |
I'm sure that they will test the food. And this is a Canada issue right now. I just posted it so everyone is aware. And I just wonder about the possibility of it being here too. Just not detected yet. |
I too feed Royal canine that's all Peeka will eat to this stuff is driving me crazy! |
Wow! How horrible....it is really getting harder and harder to find a good reputable breed to feed our babies!!! I didn't even know that Royal Canin was having problems...and it wasn't mentioned in the recent recall either, was it?? |
royal canin Noooooooooooo...please Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier is the only food my little man will eat without eating fasts!! Maybe it's time for home cooked meals but how safe really is the food we eat for the tiny little bodies and organs they have....... What to do! |
Go to their website.... Here's what I see on their website royalcanin.us (maybe its only in canada) Though I must admit, I'm taking my dogs off of it. They don't like it anymore and won't eat it. Here's what it says on their website: The recent nationwide pet food recall initiated by Menu Foods and other companies does not include any Royal Canin USA pet food products. All of our pet food brands, including Feline Health Nutrition, Canine Health Nutrition, Royal Canin Veterinary Diets, Sensible Choice, and Kasco continue to be available in your local pet food outlet. The safety and nutritional quality of our pet food is our top priority because we understand that the health of your pet is your top priority. For details on the recall, contact Menu Foods at 1-866-895-2708 or visit the company's web site at: www.menufoods.com/recall. |

I found one article on it in out of a newspaper in Toronto, and I'm sorry I don't have the thread because I was looking at it at work, but it was only a couple veterinary prescription formulas of can food that accidently contained too much vitamin D and it was not any way related to the menu foods recall. The veterinary outlets were contacted to pull the food and the problem was corrected at the food plant according to the article I read. It did not include any royal canin kibble or regular can food to my knowledge. Hope this helps. |

Thank goodness for that! Tansy has been on Royal Canin Yorkshire since it was first launched a few years ago. It's the only food that doesn't give her the trots. Before that I was tearing my hair trying to find something that didn't cause intermitant diarrhoea. Even chicken & rice could set her off :( |
