Dr. Harvey's Canine Health Hi, Has anyone heard of Dr. Harvey's Canine Health dog food? If so, what do you think of it? It is holistic dog food pre-mix. I bought a small bag at a local pet boutique. I have not used it yet but I was wondering if anyone has tried it. The lady in the store swears by it...she said she eats it too....not so sure about that but I guess.... The food itself is freeze dried instead of heat treated like most dog foods. The directions seem pretty easy. You boil the dried mix in water then add chicken, turkey or beef along with an oil such as olive, flax seed etc. You are supposed to be able to make enough for a week. After the recalls and reading about all the bad dog food out there, Im willing to try out anything that will keep him healthy. |
I've been cooking for my 2 this past week and saw that food online today and am going to give it a try as I'd like them to have some variety. |
Karla - what are the ingredients of the food and how much meat and oil do you need to add??? Sounds very interesting..... |
The only thing is, it is very expensive. I bought the smallest bag and it cost me 15.95! He sells it on other websites for 11.95 but I guess with shipping and tax it would come out to be the same amount. Im going to see how long this bag lasts.:( |

I can't remember how much protein but you add 1 tablespoon of oil. (my directions are at home) They said that 1 lb makes enough for 2 servings...here is the website with more info: http://www.drharveys.com/home.asp You can get it online or in Michigan they sell it at a pet boutique in Royal Oak. Like I said in my other post, this can get pretty costly, so Im kind of on the fence with this one and I purchased it already. |
I know I'm REALLY late to this thread, but thought I'd write anyway. I've been feeding this to Sammy ever since August 2007 (I adopted him at 4 years old July 1, 2007) at the recommendation of his groomer (she has/shows dobermans and she feeds them Dr. Harvey's and swears by it for all breeds). Sammy loves it and because I can vary the type of oils and protein it's supposed to help prevent food allergies. He's been very healthy (knock on wood!!!) and his hair is much softer and shinier since he's been eating it. I also mix some Karma (organic dry dog food by Natura) for crunch/dental health into it. ~ Lara :artist: and Sammy :aimeeyork |
I have been feeding my gang Dr. Harvey's for two years now. I swear by it. My one yorkie, Zoey, had IBS and we were having trouble with her blood levels and after putting her on Dr. Harvey's her blood work comes back within the normal levels every time. My vet is old school and really objects to home cooked diets, I ignore him and after lengthy discussions about the phosphrous/calcium issues, I had one of my other dogs have a full blood panel screening and everything came back fine so my vet has to back off about it...LOL It is somewhat pricy and you can fill in with good old hamburger/chicken, rice and a vegetable for some added variety. I have been very successful doing it this way for two years. With Dr. Harvey's, you rotate meats and oils so you get some variety. Here is a link from his website. http://www.drharveys.com/dogs/index.asp I am considering carrying it in my online boutique (I don't have it offered on the site yet) so if anyone is interested you can PM and I will look into what kind of pricing discount I can get you. |

LOLOLOLOL:p :p :p Old school vets get on my nerves. What is so wrong with homecooking as long as it is done right? I am more thankful for Ellie's vet all the time. As long as calcium and phosphorus are balanced she doesn't care. Like she says, atleast we don't have to worry about dog food recalls.:) |
I love my vet...he has the good sense to know when he has lost a battle...and when pushed he will admit that about two weeks is devoted to canine nutrition in vet school and it is underwritten by the poor quality pet food mfgs like Purina and Science Diet...and you hit on the key, as long as it is balanced. He has acquiesced as he knows that I know...every once in a while he will touch on diet and he starts talking about it and I have to remind him my dogs don't eat that crap that he offers...everytime I see a new puppy parent walk out with the free ProPlan I cringe. The ingredient list of the common dog foods is a nightmare nutritionally....and they wonder why there is a higher incidence of canine cancer...doesn't take a rocket scientist. And she is right, at least we don't have to worry about the recalls! |

If you sell it on your online store, I will definitely purchase it. I will PM you. I paid $45 for the 5 lb bag at the boutique. Im hoping that this will last a while. When I buy dry food, a 5lb bag will last 3 months and costs approx $8 per bag! So I dont think that this is a cost savings...just a better food for them. |
I have three 5-6 lb yorkies and I feed them about 3/4 cup a day. A lot depends on your dogs activity level & age. AND the number of treats we give them daily..LOL PM me and I will see what I can find out. |
