Dry food vs. canned food???
 

My puppy loves his dry kibble. Is there any reason to give him canned food? He is 10 weeks old. He weighs 1lb 10 oz. The vet said he is a healthy little guy. He eats 3-4 times daily and gets nutri-cal three times. I have put out the canned food the last few days, but since we gave him a little of the dry stuff thats all he wants.

By experience , if the puppy likes the dry food , let him on .

Dry complete is better for their teeth than tinned, so no harm as long as you provide plenty of water as it will make him thirstier.

you get such conflicting advice. When Toby was tiny, I was advised by my vet that I shouldn't feed him just on dry foods. He then rattled off a few brand names, and said that sticking to these would cause liver damage and a whole host of ailments. I did as instructed but have spoken to many owners who tell me this is rubbish. The Schmobster now won't eat any dry foods because I avoided them when he was a babbie.

I feed my yorkies and Brittainy dry with canned mixed with it. It works for me! My doggies are so picky that i heat up a little canned science diet and mix it up really good with their dry science diet. They love it! sometimes when i can't get to pet smart i buy a can of Pedigree to mix. I find that my yorkies get bored with the same flavors. They probably just got me under their control. lol My friend had a maltese that she fed nothing but canned food and i'm not 100% for sure, but she told me the vet told her thats why all her teeth fell out. JUst here say. but it makes since. The poor little things toungue hung out her mouth all the time.

I give my almost 2 year old yorkie "Keno" dried food in the morning and 3/4 to a whole container of Caesers in the evening. I want him to keep eating some dried food because it helps to keep his stools formed and not too too soft.

my understanding of this subject is....dry is preferrable to canned.

I learned ALOT about dog teeth with my greyhound, Lori (RIP)...while young and living at the track the racers are fed some high calorie/hi carb "mush"......the result is often bad teeth...(there is no brushing teeth @ the track). The dry food we give our little fur babies is great for 'cleaning tartar' and a good work-out for their teeth.

Over the 8 1/2 years I had Lori I had her teeth cleaned at least once per year (@ $150 per trip with blood-work and the usual rotten teeth that had to be pulled).

She was treated for abcessed teeth at least every year and her breath would knock a buzzard off a **poop pile**!!!!!!!!!

By the time she died last week, she only had 3 canines (the long, pointy teeth in front)...NO BACK MOLARS.....and about 5 little front teeth.

Her tongue hung out ALL the time.....and when she drank from the water bowl water would "squirt" out the sides of her mouth all over the place!!!!!
(A BIG MESS!!!!!).

She LOVED chewing 'pig ears' but eventually couldn't.....the last one I gave her she 'gummed it'..but just got tired and gave up!

She was a really great dog.....I miss her so much.....but I dreaded anyone (who did not know) wanting to pet her and risk having her lick them....YUK!!!!
I brushed and brushed her teeth..(the few she had)....I washed her mouth every day...I swabbed tons of "oral care" treatments and breath gels.....

I say all this to get to my point.........I will forever feed dry kibble so no other little fur baby of mine has to go through that!!!!!

P.S. Since Lori had sooooo few teeth in her final days, we tended to feed her some canned food in with her dry kibble.........and of course my hubby thought it was only fair to give the "little ones" some canned also. Yep, they now demand canned food every day...I am trying to get them off of that bad habit by putting a few "drops" of Iams Sauce on the dry kibble and heating for a few seconds....
sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't.....

Gazou always eat dry food , I don't see why I would give him canned food .
