daily water intake? How much water should by 5 month old (slightly 7 pounds - he's not fat, just tall and skinny) puppy drink on a daily basis? I'm not letting him free feed until he's 150% housebroken, so we give him water periodically throughout the day, but I just want to know approximately how much he should have. |
water When you offer water does he act eager to drink and drink alot..if so he is not getting enough. I do perfer water at all times, because they will not overdrink when it is there, but can over drink when restricted, drink too fast and vomit... If he drinks a bit, slowly and acts okay then he is getting enough I would think...alot depends on the weather and how active he is... |
You are fine I believe you are experiencing normal water intake. Its ok for them to have fresh clean water avaiable at all times. After all, they seem to do just about everything with their mouth plus as puppies they are frequently hyper-active and running around in circles so their mouth tends to dry out rather quickly. |
When Jewel was ill and wasn't drinking as much water as we wanted our vet told us a 3 pound Yorkie needs at least 1/4 cup a day so, 1/2 to 3/4 cup a day is probably about what your baby needs. Don't want him to be dehydrated - Are you regulating his water intake to control his potty routine? |
Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times.Limiting the amount of water a dog drinks is not necessary for houtraining success and can be dangerous. A dog needs water to digest food, to maintain a proper body temperature and proper blood volume, and to clean her system of toxins and wastes. A healthy dog will automatically drink the right amount of water. |

have you tried ice? when i get a glass of ice, i have 2 yorkies waiting for their ice also. they like the crushed from the frig ice maker. they can just hear it starting and they come running. This might help with making it a treat for them. And good for them. Just a thought..:) |
This is a good question, but the answer varies GREATLY per dog and it's environment. I'd say that during the housebreaking phase you should offer your puppy water w/ each meal and if he's not a big drinker, add some to his food-enough so that it floats. He'll get PLENTY of water for the day if you do. In addition, I would offer him however much he can drink in one sitting about 10 minutes before taking him out to potty. The one thing I certainly wouldn't do is give him free water or water more frequently until the housebreaking is well under w/ and w/ great success. |

Thanks for the responses!! OK - thanks for the help!! I'm happy to report that Banksy drinks about 1 1/2 cups of water a day. We do regulate his water intake as he is not fully potty trained yet, but his water is out for him approximately 80 % of the time. He doesn't seem overly thirsty, but I just wanted to be sure he was getting enough. Thanks again!!:D |
