Too much of a good thing? I am totally confused! Buddy does not have dry skin but I put him on missing link, without discussing it with my vet, because so many of YT'ers swear by it. We are growing his coat out so I thought it would help give it a healthy looking coat and be good for his skin as well. However, so many of you are also using salmon oil, fish capsules etc. There is also omega 3 and 6 in foods. Isn't this too much fish oil for a small dog? I asked my vet last year about salmon oil and he told me not to use it because even though it is good oil it is still oil and can add to the fat content of his body. Since Yorkies are suseptable to pancreatitis why take the chance. Can someone shed some light on this oil thing? Thanks for your help. Carol & Buddy |
sorry babe, lexi uses salmon oil too, just from refrences of my fellow yorkie talk friends.. i would like to know that answer too... |
Salmon Oil is ok but I would not use it every day. I would use either Missing Link or Grizzly Salmon Oil but not both together -- only one at a time. I prefer the Grizzly Salmon Oil -- my babies LOVE the taste and it makes their coats silky and soft. I dab some on their kibble every 2-3 days. Be careful of overuse. |
I explained to my vet I was giving my kids missing link and the dog food has also has the omega 3 & 6 oils in it. So I asked if the dogs could be overdosed on it and she said no! But I did stop using the missing link. |

Well, I do know this...Jo was itchy while on ML so I took him off of it...I never saw a whole lot of improvement in his coat or Riley's for that matter. I recently tried to use it again for the joint supplements and Jo got itchy again so I stopped using it. I thought he had allergies so I was told to try a fish based food so I bought California Natural, either herring or salmon, and sweet potato I think. His coat got so greasy and he had little blisters on his belly, lots of them! according to the vet, his hair follicles were blocked from the extra oil and it caused the blisters. So I took him off of that one and they're now on the raw diet...no supplements of any kind and they're both doing great. The only supplement I've used that helped with anything was the DermCaps for Riley's dry skin when he was a puppy but we used them for a short time and stopped when the issue cleared up. I do agree that too much of a good thing can create problems of it's own so we feed raw and no supplements. |

I talked with my vet about it, I have Jaden on one of the highest quality organic foods out there in his opinion, (Canidae All Life Stages) and I give Jaden a half dosage of missing link in the morning and a half dosage of the grizzly salmon oil at night. I would never give hima full dosage of both, while my vet said it wouldn't technically "hurt" him he says its uneeded and could cause upset stomaches and irratated bowel movements, so I stick to my half dosages and Jaden is just barely 4 pounds and Jewelina is 1 pound 11 ounces. He told me if I wanted to give them both it was fine as they had different ways of distributing the omega oils in them and it might actually work better since they would have two different ways of absorbing those vitamins and oils. If you were just giving him one, I'd just stick with one full dosage of whatever you choose, if you wanted to give him two different types then I would cut the dosage down to 1/2 so he's only get one full dosage of supplement, just with two different products. I use 1 full teaspoon of missing link in cottage cheese along with fish oil. They eat Canidae and life's abundance. This combo has been the only thing that has worked to eliminate his flaky skin issues. My vet approved it so I feel good giving it to them. |
