:icon5: Right Age for Nail Clipping 3 Attachment(s) Hi there I have 12 week old Yorkie named Yoshi, and I am confused as to what is the ideal age for nail clipping. The whole idea about nail clipping is kind of scary and I would not like to traumatize my puppy. He's never had his nails clipped at all. Should I do it while he sleeps? I have already purchased a nail trimmer recommended by our Vet, groomer's refuse to take him since he is so young and hasn't had his Rabies shot yet. Any stories, suggestions or ideas are welcome! Thank You:aimeeyork |
puppies nails are cut from one week old then every week as to not scratch moms tender belly...if your pups nails have never been done and you are a bit hesitant why not ask your vet to do it and show you how. Its a scary thing for a pup if they will lay calmly on their back, rub their paws and belly for a couple days so he/she gets used to your touch then clip away...only at the hook! make sure you have stop bleed on hand if you cut to far down. all the best |
mine is younger than that and at the very tip of his name is a little white i do not cut past that at all. like i said its just a very little bit of white! |
never too young to cut their nails. My vet clippped my pups nails on his first well pet visit. Chase was 8 weeks old at the time. |
Puppies should be getting their nails clipped from approximately a week of age and every week thereafter. Their lil nails are razor sharp. |
Thank YOu Thank you so much for the insight. Boy do I know about those razor sharp nails, every bath. Thanks again for the information, I will ask the vet to show me how on our next visit. |
Just file them with a heavy duty emery board (black ones two to a package at Wal-Mart) a little bit once a week. No need to be bothered by cutting them and maybe getting them too short or not short enough. A dull nail clipper can actually split the nail too. |
Love the Filing Idea I actually managed to cut a very tiny bit of the nails but im just too afraid to cut him so I will definitely file them sounds much better and less scary. |
