Question for those who feed Canidae. I feed my two Canidae. Based on what Canidae suggests, I feed them a cup (1/2 cup each) a day. However, lately, they seem to eat all of it rather quickly. Should I give them more? How much Canidae do you give your yorkie(s)? |
I am not sure about that, I am lucky if mine eats a 1/3 cup in 1 day. How old are your yorkies? Could they be having a growth spurt in which they need extra nutrition? |
My girls eat out of the same dish...(I use a pie plate) I don't measure. I usually put about a handful and a half (maybe a little less) and about 1 1/2 heaping tablespoons of Canidae wet..I mix that all together and USUALLY they eat it all...I do this twice a day. I also don't pick it up if they don't eat it all...they are little pickers....Sometimes they eat it all and sometimes they don't. |
do you free feed? if you do have you always? i find that because layla knows her food is always going to be there... she doesn't wolf it down.. she just picks all day.. but if i fed her only in the mornign and night and then took it away.. i'm sure she'd eat it all because she knew it was going away. |

I don't measure at all. I put food in the bowl and when it's empty I put more in. Both my poodle and yorkie eat out of it. Both free feed and come to it whenever they want........some days they eat more and others less (like humans)...........no way am I going to deprive them of a little indulgence :D |
Mine eats less than half a cup a day but I do mix in some cottage cheese, yogurt, veggie, boiled meat etc for him. I feed him twice a day, no free feeding. |
Canidae has 468 calories per cup of food. Go to this "calculator," plug in her weight at the top, and then go to her activity level and see how many calories she needs a day. Then calculate how much food she needs based on 468 calories per cup of food. http://www.mycockerspaniel.com/mer.htm |
Canidae, for whatever reason, is a stinky food. Loki gobbles it up as soon as I put it in the bowl. Dogs always think they are hungry. If you see that they are loosing weight then you can feed more. Otherwise, if they are a healthy weight, you are feeding enough. If Loki still acts really hungry, like trying to steal our food (which he doesn't usually do) I will give him a healthy snack. |
I free feed in the sense that I give them all their daily rations in the morning. One is almost 3 and the other is about 10 months. After looking at the calculator and see what others feed, I think I am doing OK. Thanks! |
I free feed but I use Proplan. I just read that it wasn't that good of a food on here though so I am checking around. This is what my breeder fed him since he was a puppy and I have continued it. When I feed I just fill his bowl up and he lets me know when it is empty. Usually we fill it every day or everyother day. He nibbles at all hours day and night. He doesn't woof it down. I did buy some of that soft hamburger type stuff in a package just to mix w/ his proplan every now and then for a treat. Well I found that he would pick out the proplan and spit it on the floor and just eat the hamburger stuff  |

Thank you for telling me that. You made me feel so much better. I have been searching foods all day long. I actually did take him off of Proplan to try the PurinaOne challenge and my vet said to put him back on ProPlan. The only time he gets itchy skin is in April. The groomer and I have been watching this. So I think he does have seasonal allergies, but nothing to do with the food. |
