Has anyone spayed/neutered.. their furbabies at the age of 6 months? I had Chloe spayed at nine months but she had two hernias too and they wanted her to be a little bigger. I asked our vet when I can get Bentley neutered and he said they can do it at 6 months. Just wondering if anyone else neutered that early or waited. Thanks for any info! |
I had Lex spayed at 6 mos and she did GREAT!! She was 4.5 lbs when they spayed her by the way. I would think neutering would be easier than a spay and don't know of any reason to wait. |
6 - 7 months are the ideal ages to have him neutered . |
Gracie was 6 months and about 5 lbs or so when she was spayed. The vet wanted her to be at least 6 months but not yet into her first heat for her spay. She did great! |
I did it at 5 months, no problems at all. |
Manya is scheduled to be sprayed next week. She is 2 lbs and 6 months old. I am a little paranoid about it but the doctor said that it is the optimal age. |
Six months is always when we've done it, however, some people have their male yorkies neutered at a very young age. |
The 1st Vet we were seeing spayed Misha at 4 months. She said the earlier the better. We no longer go to her. I thought she was to young & only weighed a little over 2 lbs. She came through with flying colors. |
Lillian and Minnie were spade at 6 months and they're doing just fine.. |
Neutered one chihuahua at 6 months, 3lbs; second chi spayed at 18 months - 1lb 12oz; and my Yorkie was neutered 2 months ago at 5 yrs - 7lbs! My shihtzu was spayed done at 6 months. They were all fine regardless of age and weight.:aimeeyork |
Hey, 1 question if your dont mind me cutting in, I am getting Valentino Neutered when he is 6 months i believe, but i was wondering, Whats the main reason to have it done? I mean if your fur boy/girl is indoors all the time, meaning not able to do it with other dogs whats the purpose? I would just like to be a little educated on this subject. |

I would have not done it to my Yorkie if it weren't that he had to have surgery for bladder stones. He never marked territory in the house, was never aggressive, and he was never "sexual" in any way. Neutering has not changed him in any way that I see. I was afraid of weight gain. The other dogs live with me but are my daughter's and it was her decision to fix them. |
Chachi was neutered at 7 months and Jewels at 6 months. I had them spayed and neutered on the same day. They both did fine. Jewels was out of sorts the night we brought her home but was fine by the next day |
I really appreciate the responses. I would hate to change Valentino inany way tho. Has other people expierienced changes in their pup? |
Bailey will be 6 months in 3 weeks and I plan on doing it around that time :) |
We had Lexi spayed at the age of 6 months. The only requirement by our vet, other than age, was that she wouldn't do the spaying until she reached 2 pounds. She barely made the 2 pounds at 6 months. Lexi had absolutely no problems. |
If I had it to do over again, I would have neutered Max as early as possible. I read that they're doing it as young as 3 months now. I wasn't going to neuter him because he has no access to females. We live in NYC in a 6th floor apartment and I keep him leashed in the park too. What I didn't know was that small male dogs have a tendency to mark and I now am having a world of trouble breaking him of the habit of peeing in the house on the rug, on the couch, in his crate, etc. You know how strong-willed Yorkies can be and I now have to show him that I'm the boss, not him. If I had neutered him before he had begun to mark, I might have been able to avoid this. He was nicely trained before puberty. This retraining is annoying and tedious. I'm not telling you what to do, just sharing my own experience with you. Judy |
