Clipping Nails

I am curious to know if anyone has hard time clipping nails. My dog hates it. Since she won't let me do this at home (it is a traumatic experience for both of us), I usually take her to the vet to get this done where she is usually shaking all over before she goes in. Does anyone have any advice on this? How are your dogs handling "fun" experience? Where do you get their nails clipped and how often?

First off I want to welcome you to YT. It's a great place to be and you can learn a lot.

My dogs kind of hate it as well. Mind you the groomer tells me that Lex is cool when I take him in for his grooming. Lex loves to be bathed but the whole nails things he gets antsy. Lulu is another one but then again she gives me a hassle to take her dang on bath. You would think that by now seeing as she gets one weekly since I have had her for two months she would be use to it by now.

What I do with Lulu the squiggler is after the bath wrap her in the towel and tke out a foot at a time and cut just the edges from the nail. The wrapping doesn't allow her much moving room but she still fights it.

Good luck. Some people have no problems at all with it. Sometimes Lex acts like I am trying to cut off a damn toe when I do it.

Thanks and hello to everyone, I am glad I found this. I have been reading posts for a few weeks now and enjoyed how everyone is fond of their yorkies and willing to share their experience. It's very nice to know that their other people that love the same creatures which give us so much back and grow up being so smart.

Welcome to YT!! Is that your yorkie in your avatar? So cute! I'm Megan and I've got 3 dogs - two yorkies Maddie and Tucker and thier big lab brother Rusty. :) I hope you enjoy yourself here.

I wouldn't go near my dogs with nail clippers lol. I let the groomer deal with that. Good luck!

Thanks, yes that's Mahnusja. It's hard to pronounce for English speakers, so it's Mahi when I have her introduced. I am glad to know that it's not only us that dislike this so much.

I don't clip my two yorkies nails...I'm too afraid I'd get a bleeder and hurt them :( I let the groomer trim their nails once every two weeks and they both do great with him. I'm there the entire time and they are really calm about it. I guess they can sense that he knows what he's doing and I don't! If I go to the vet in between their grooming appts. My vet will normally nip a bit of their nails too. I find it's easier to
keep them shorter by just barely nipping them all the time then letting them grow relaly long and having to have them cut more and risk getting a bleeder. Jewelina has never had a bleeder since I got her and Jaden has only had one, after that we started having the groomer do it!

My groomer does it once a month when I have them groomed

PeanutnTobysmom 02-16-2007 04:41 PM

I also have the groomer do it. Toby would try to bite me, then look at me all embarrassed. Peanut will scream like she is being tortured. About 2 years ago I clipped Peanut's nails and one split down the middle and got infected. The vet visit plus antibiotics cost $110. I won't be trying that again.

I usually let their feet soak in the sink when I am giving them their baths..this will soften the nails...I leave them in the sink and talk to them all the time telling them how good they are and then I clip just the tip off. I'm sure I'm not clipping enough off but, I am afraid to cut the quick..I have seen a new nail clipper...it's called the quickfinder, it has a red, yellow and green light on it...when the green light is on it is safe to clip. I'm not sure if they are on the market yet though.

I've always cut their nails myself. It was difficult at first because they would fight and fidget. Daddy holds them while I clip. Gradually they got used to it. Now we clip nails once a week, and I only have to take off the tip.

I have someone else hold the dog while I clip. Lucy is particularly antsy, and so the peanut butter stuffed Kong comes out. Sort of as a tease... she just gets to mainly sniff it, it keeps her nose busy, while I work the toes! Of course, when we're all done, she gets the kong for real! It's her treat. One thing I would recommend ifyou are doing this yourself, have the styptic powder out and handy, in case. And if you or the dog are new to this, just do a paw at a time and take breaks in between.

THe quickfinder? Sounds like a great nail clipper. Where did you hear about this and where can I order it?

When it is nap time I get a warm blanket out of the dryer and she will fall asleep in my lap and I clip her nails then, if she wakes up and changes positions I just wait until she gets back to sleep soundly and start again. I am kinda new at this so I am not sure if I am clipping them short enough but I have been cutting a little shorter each time and I think they are at a good length now. Good luck if you do it yourself, I was so nervous the first few times that I was sweating.
