Does anyone have a suggestion for a picky eater? Our family recently got a new family member named Mitzie. She is a Yorkie. She had been abandoned at a vet. She is so precious and loving! I am having a hard time finding anything she will eat. I bought her some canned Blue Buffalo (lamb and rice, I think) and she ate it at first, but then stopped and wouldn't eat. I bought her Chicken Soup for dogs and she has refused that. She has barely eaten since yesterday. What should I do? She seems to be very happy and seems to love us already very much! We have been spoiling her with love and giving her much much attention, but she just won't eat! |
I have been cooking for my dog so far since she usually doesn't touch any of the dog food. But just recently I found this pet food which she tried and was eating in small portions. I hope she stays with it since it has a lot of good stuff in it. Here is the web site. http://www.auntjeni.com/ |
You didn't say how old she was, nor did you say IF you tried dry food. You didn't say if you had other sibling babies. I have 3 Yorkies, the first 2 ate anything and everything I gave them. When I first got #2 Sissy, Chloe #1 wanted her puppy food, Sissy #2 wanted her adult food. When I got Starr #3 she refused puppy food, I tried what the breeder gave her, I tried leaving her in a x-pen alone with her food, I started buying every style/brand of puppy food around. The only way I could get her to eat puppy food was to boil chicken, dice it tiny and mix together really good. She would still pick out the chicken but she got some of the puppy food as well but still wanted the dry adult 1 yr Iams food that I was giving to Chloe & Sissy. I tried everything in the world to get her to eat puppy food. It was a challenge. Once she was out of the x-pen more, she made sure she hit the bowl of adult food, by the time she went back into the x-pen she was full. Needless to say I gave in, she now eats adult iams with the older ones. I know she should be on puppy food but with 2 others it was way too differcult and I could not justify picking up the other 2's dry food bowl because of her so this is what they all eat. BTW They don;t like other brands any longer. I say dice some chicken if you are worried she won't eat even if you don;t give in by day 3, and little by little start putting less and less chicken in, if you see she loses interest, add more again. If you have more then one, try what I did. I do know they will not allow themselves to starve to death like some senior citizens do! I also think it is hard for you since you don;t know if the original owners gave her steak everynight! Good luck and keep us posted when you find something that works.........:) |
Mix it with rice, yogurt, a tiny bit of canned food or even sprinkle real parm or another kind of cheese on it. Normally I'd say to wait until she eats... but she's a rescue so we're going to give her a lot of slack. :D |

Also, try Wingaling. No dog will turn up it's nose at Wingaling. (it's by Merrick) |

When my pup would not eat I would put some Nutrical on my finger for him to lick. Usually after he had a few finger-fuls of Nutrical he'd find his appetite and eat his food. I also started putting some Iams puppy gravy on his food and that seems to make it taste better for him. Good luck with your new rescue baby. :) |
Mitzie is about 3 or 4 years old. After the vet she stayed briefly with a friend of mine, she has 4 small children and just didn't have time to give Mitzie the attention she needs. I think her children may have been giving her table food and may be why Mitzie is not eating well. But I do have good news! She got up this morning and have some of the Chicken Soup for dogs! (it's the dry kind) She is our first Yorkie, so any suggestions would be appreciated. No other inside dogs, just Mitzie's two new big sisters who are crazy about her! She really is a very very sweet little dog and very smart. I don't know what the circumstances were that she would be left, but I am glad she's with us now! Thank you for all your suggestions and I will probably be asking more questions!!! I hope no one minds! |
