Questions about neutering the tiny males... I talked with my vet the other day and asked about having Jo-Jo neutered and they said their rule of thumb is 6 months old and 4 pounds. However, if they were under 4 pounds they would take extra precautions. Has anyone had their tiny male neutered? If so, other than bloodwork and anesthesia, is it all that different than when done on a 'normal' size male? I mean, what questions should I be asking and what should I look for to be sure it's the right vet? I just don't think Jo will ever hit 4 pounds...he'll be lucky to hit 3.5 full grown. |
I had my other Yorkie neutered below 4 pounds. He never got bigger than 4.5 pounds, and most of that was hair. Maybe you should get a second opinion. How many pounds is he now? |
He'll be 6 months old on June 2nd and he's only 2 pounds 9 oz. |
My sister's Maltese was only a little over 2 pounds when he was neutered and he came out of it just fine. They did take extra precautions with him since he was so little and he didn't have any complications. He also had a luxating patella surgery when he was a little older and about 4 pounds and also didn't have any problems then. If you feel like your vet isn't going to treat him any differently than a larger dog then you should try and get a 2nd opinion. |

 WHOA! He is a tiny thing! |
I do have confidence in my vet but we'll probably wait a few months to have this done, he hasn't lost all of his puppy teeth yet either so those will have to be checked while he's under. Maybe he can gain a little over the next month or so. >>WHOA! He is a tiny thing!<< Yep...there isn't much to Jo-Jo! |
My Romeo is going in the morning to be neutered. He is 5 months and between 3 and 4 pounds (he weighed 3 at vet 2 weeks ago and my scale now says 4 so I'm not sure). I'm dreading it but know it needs to be done and the vet says it will be fine. |
Good luck to you and Romeo...I hope all goes well. I think we're going to hold off for a while...he's still hanging onto that other testicle for some reason. Also, we'll be moving out of state in a few weeks and I'll need to find a new vet so I might as well wait until then. |

GEEZ!!! What a big guy! My little Sancho is over 6 months and he's barely pushing 4 lbs. Sancho needs to start eating his wheaties!! :-) |
Maximus is 14 weeks and is 3.3 lb.....he gained a lb in a week so Mommy got yelled at :( |
Romeo did great on his neutering Friday...he only had to take pain med that night...he was wimpering and it broke my heart. Woke up yesterday and was happy and playing. Now I just have to keep him from licking his wound and hoping I don't have to put that collar on him! |
That's great! I'm glad Romeo did o.k. and I hope he won't have to wear the collar...those things look so uncomfortable. |
He's done great! Only that one pain pill the first night and no collar...he should be completely in the clear by the weekend. You'd never know he had it done with the way he's running around! If it keeps him healthier...THEN IT'S WORTH IT! |
A little male from one of my litter have been neutered at 6 months old , he was 2 pounds 11 ounces and all went well . His sister was a little smaller and have been spayed without any problems . |
