I got my first Yorkie last month. She was a couple of weeks shy of one year old. In four days she will have been with me for a month.

I joined Yorkie talk before I got her. I was here seeking information and there is plenty here. I heard a lot of folks praising Eukanuba. I saw it on other Yorkie sites as well.

I have found some alternatives to companies that use animal testing in such an inhumane way. I have just ordered some free samples (you have to pay shipping) here:

I could not, in all good conscience, continue to remain a customer of Iams or any other company with such despicable practices. I feel as strongly about this as I do about the puppy mills. But that is another issue.

So let us find some good alternatives and let Iams know that we are seeking alternatives, and why. I have already written them my letter. How about you? You can communicate with them from their website:

We all love our animals and they are important to us. But who are the experimented upon ones important to? Why, US!! Because it is our money that they are attempting to obtain and when we continue to give it to them when we know the truth, we are also culpable in their actions.

In the past I have questioned IAMS and Eukanuba representatives at dog shows. I let them know that many people including myself would never use there products because of the animal testing. At the time I was told that the PETA investigation happened over ten years ago and they no longer test on animals. I do not know if this is true or not but think we all need to look at both sides. I don't use either product because I think there are better products out there.

Pet-Food Manufacturer Violates Own Policy Against Making Healthy Animals Sick

Jackson, Miss. ? PETA has obtained documents describing painful Iams-funded experiments on dogs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Roger B. Johnson, a university experimenter, is inducing gingivitis?a painful stage of periodontal disease?in 21 beagles by repeatedly suturing and cutting up their gums in "nutritional" experiments funded by the Dayton, Ohio-based cat- and dog-food manufacturer. The crude experiments received Iams? funding in November 2002 and run through October 2005.

Iams purportedly ordered the experiments to test its "Dental Defense" diets, even though the company promised in June 2002 that it would "not contract for, nor conduct, any study involving surgeries to create or mimic diseases," explicitly stating that it would not fund "any university positions that may be involved in such activities for the study of cat and dog nutrition." Iams? experiment also calls for the dogs to be recycled into other experiments??a blatant violation of the company?s adoption policy.

PETA is demanding that Iams retire the beagles from their barren laboratory cages and place them with a beagle rescue organization and that Iams adopt humane testing alternatives such as collaborative veterinary clinic studies on dogs who have naturally developed gingivitis.

These aren?t the first animals Iams has subjected to painful tests. PETA?s 2003 undercover investigation of an Iams contract laboratory showed that at least 27 dogs were killed, while others died of illnesses that went untreated. PETA?s investigator also found dogs and cats confined to small, barren cages?some for up to six years?and dogs who were silenced by having their vocal cords cut out.

"Iams executives have been lying through their teeth about these cruel experiments for years," says PETA Senior Vice President Mary Beth Sweetland. "Promising not to injure animals and then slicing into their gums and subjecting them to a painful oral disease proves once again that Iams is talking out of both sides of its mouth."

A growing number of veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and pet-supply stores from across the U.S. and Canada are refusing to buy or sell Iams products in protest of Iams? cruel laboratory tests. PETA?s campaign against Iams has also garnered high-profile support from celebrities such as Rue McClanahan, Morrissey, Cindy Margolis, and Chrissie Hynde.
