Tiny tears Hello everyone, I have had my first Yorkie now for a month and I am having real trouble cleaning his eyes. He is 13 weeks old. Tiny is a very strong willed puppy, rather like his owner so maybe I'm a bad influence, and I've tried getting him used to it but he kicks, bites, wriggles and generally won't keep still for us to do it :animal36 The only person who can do it is the vet who he is too scared of to take on with one of his exorcist moments. I've tried a fine tooth comb and also using a damp cloth to clean the area but to no avail. It's like trying to catch sunshine in your hand! Any advice or do I just have to keep trying until I prevail? |
I use a warm damp cloth and a flea comb and i do it at night when they are tired |

Ahh..this is a good tip! I usually wait after he eats and then play and then get tired before I clean his eyes. From tomorrow onwards, I will do it before he gets his breakfast! |

Follow up to Tiny Tears....... Well we tried everything that was suggested in the forum but to no avail he still turned into psycho dog! So when we took him to the vet yesterday for two more vaccinations we told him that we were having problems. Carlos (our vet) seemed somewhat amused by our predicament and I?m sure he was thinking huh amateur dog owners (and to be honest so were we!) He gets out his little comb and goes to start brushing Tiny?s eyes... Well cue Exorcist dog, he totally flipped he was scratching, biting, screaming the most ungodly noise you have ever heard. Like a dying duck! The vet took hold of him by the scruff of the neck and lifted him in the air so his movement was restricted. Tiny continued trying to break the sound barrier. Two adult humans with a combined weight of twenty stone versus a 1kg yorkshire terrier. Even with two of us pinning Tiny down we still couldnt clean his eyes. When we asked the vet what the solution was he replied ?patience? (what no sedative for me or the dog?) Tiny 1 Vet and parents 0 (plus one less arm for the vet) Yorkshire Terriers - small but powerful All hail the mighty Tiny puppy :aimeeyork |
Try getting a very warm, soft washcloth and first rubbing his head with it while holding in your lap. Slowly, with each rub, move downward to between the eyes. I sort of wrap the washcloth around my index finger and use it. Then gradually wipe a little at the corners of the eye. Sadie was afraid of the face combing too, but has gotten used to the above. Each time, we start out on the head and then gradually and gently move down. |
Yep, just like Debra said:thumbup: And DO NOT give up! Don't take "no" for an answer. YOU are the boss, NOT Tiny (as much as he would like to think so:laugh:!) Don't get discouraged, it'll take some time. My Luna is a real hellcat when it comes to getting her face cleaned, but we don't let her boss us around and her face DOES get cleaned, whether she likes it or not. |
When we groom new puppies sometimes they scream and act like that the first time or two. The most important thing is to not give up and don't get upset. Being calm and assertive is key. Hold on and do whatever you need to do. Or at least pretend to. If you are cleaning his eyes, for example, go thru the motions even if you are not successfully getting the gunk off. Keep your voice calm and wait him out. Don't get mean, just firm and calm. He will eventually tire out and calm down (maybe only for a few seconds). When he is calm, immediately praise him and stop. Always stop on a good note. It may take a couple times but soon you will go to clean his eyes and he will surprise you and just stand there like a good little boy. |
I give my baby distilled water to drink. BIG difference in her eyes! |

I still wash Jake's face in the morning and at night with a warm wash cloth. He actually seems to like it, I think it feels good to him. I just hold him in my arms and talk to him quietly. He lays really still and lets me wash his face. The best time to do it is when they're sleepy. Seems to relax him even more at night. After I wash his face, he goes straight to the bedroom because he knows the routine.:) |
Another thing to try it to tightly wrap their entire body in a towel so just their head is sticking out - a safe, good restraint. One of you hold him, the other cleans eyes. As time goes on and he realizes the cleaning isn't going to kill him (lol), he should get calmer and calmer. Patience, my dear, and lots of it! :) |
Spencer is the same way he doesn't like it when i wash his face with a warm face cloth or when i try and trim the fur around his eyes and wash his eyes . & even though I do get frustrated and sometimes quit I will go back and do it. He doesn't bite me or anything he just gets antsy and moves around. |
