?? Boiled Chicken Livers ?? Does anyone know if this is good or bad to give them??? This past week I have been boiling chicken liver, smashing and smooshing it up and mixing it in with the AM and PM food. This is the food they get (AM and PM) Wellness Dry - Weight Management - 10 to 15 pieces (hammered to dust :p ) 1 Tablespoon - 90% Lean Ground Meat - Boiled 1 Tablespoon - Raw Shreded and Cut up Carrots 1 Raw String Bean - Sliced as fine as can be 1/4 Tablespoon - Nupro I don't put a lot of the chicken liver, maybe 1/2 Tablespoon - BUT they Lick and Lick and Lick and then come back to Lick their bowls even more clean. They LOVE the boilded chicken liver. I just want to know is this bad to give them???? ..anyone :confused: |

I think the chicken livers are very high in fat! I do know they are full of cholestrol! I would be afraid to give them to a Yorkie. I used to give them to my larger breed dog but never to Buddy. I also would like the correct answer to this question. Carol & Buddy |
me to , i have low iron and i would take like triple s tonic and such and then one day my doctor said just to eat liver from chicken and that you could bake it or fry it dont eat alot of it but eat some of it and it only costs about 2 dollars so i did and you know it doesnt taste bad (sorry if thats gross for some but it didnt) and you know every few months i crave it and my doctor said well then you know when you need iron, weird huh anyway but yeah i would like to know caue i always have leftovers cause i dont eat the whole littel bucket when i have some and i see lots of treats that say made with liver so hummmm i dont know, |

reading a book recomended by a member here, it says, some people have seen great health benefits in their animals from regularly feeding small amounts of raw liver. Just be sure that you dnt go overboard with liver. Limit it to less than 10% of the meat u feed overall. Not only does the liver concentrate and store pollutants, but it could overdose your pet with vitamin A, which is one of the few vitamins known to cause problems in excess. I'd say the amount you are giving them is fine. |
I wouldn't give liver every day unless you have cooked up about a pound or less, ground and added it to 3 or 4 pounds of cooked beef with rice, lentils, split peas, fresh broccoli and carrots. Liver tends to loosen the bowels quite a bit. |
I have very picky eaters, and this seems to be a winner - so far So far their poop is pretty solid and well formed. Without the liver that I add to the mix, they won't eat. Then I am forced to sprinkle cheese or grated chicken jerky ontop of their mix. Then they will eat. I also can't do the suggestion of - well if they don't eat, take it away... The problem is, I work full time and I have two POOP EATERS. So, I really want them to eat in the AM before I leave, b/c then within 1/2 hour they poop and I can get it before them :p Otherwise, if I didn't 'doctor' up their food and get them to eat it - They would just EAT POOP all day :eek: ...I guess I will cut back on the chicken liver and not sprinkle so much on, maybe I can wean them down to 'very' little chicken liver, or just go completely natural with the food, like Yorkiedaze suggests - sound good too! |
I think this will answer your question: Many dog treats and prepared foods contain liver so it may surprise you to find liver on the bad foods list. In small amounts liver is good for your dog, but if the liver intake is too high it can cause nutritional problems because liver has a high content of vitamin A. Consumption of this vitamin in large amounts can lead to vitamin A toxicity, or hypervitaminosis A. If your dog eats raw liver or consumes three servings of cooked liver a week it could lead to bone problems. Feeding liver to a dog taking Vitimin A supplements can lead to an overdose of Vitamin A. Symptoms of hypervitaminosis A are deformed bones, excessive bone growth on the elbows and spine, weight loss and anorexia.
