Confused about fleas I found a flea on Lottie about 2wks ago, went to petsmart got Johnsons spot on, Bob Martin flea shampoo, Bob Martin Home flea flogger Plus twin pack. I gave lottie a bath, once she was dry i used the spot on. It said that you could re-apply after 7days. I then washed everything that lottie came in contact with that was able to fit in the washing machine. Used the flea flogger in my sitting room and bedroom. I dont have a very big apartment so had the doors to the hallway open when i did the sitting room. anyhoo she seemed to be over them. I kept checking her and there wasnt any signs, no tell tale "droppings" left behind by the fleas. I gave her another bath a week later, this time with the flea shampoo and then once dry gave her another spot on. That was this wednesday. Yesterday she was scratching again but not much, then tonite while sitting with her on the sofa i see another flea, so i check her all over and theres a couple of "droppings" but no more fleas. I managed to lose the flea i found on her much to my disgust. I was told by a woman in the supermarket that nothing you buy from a supermarket or a pet store will get rid of fleas that the only things that will shift them you have to get from the vet. My mother sent me 4-in-1 pest repeller, that is meant to keep rodents away but will also work on ants/cockroaches/spiders/fleas and other insects but it says that with in 2wks of using the unit (it plugs into the power socket) you may see an increase in the pests your trying to get rid of but that it then will settle down and you will be pest free. I wonder if thats why im seeing a flea again, but im kinda annoyed considering ive used the shampoo and the spot on, on lottie, and used the floggers to kill them in the apartment and i still find one....i have pretty much kept her inside since she first got them, only taking her out in the paved area out side the apartment to play ball,. I hate the thought of her having fleas and the thought that i have them in my apartment. Im planning on going to the vet if it doesnt get better in the next week and buying stuff from them. Its annoying when ive spent alot already on flea stuff that doesnt appear to have worked. And they dont even give you an idea of how long they will take to work. im just so confused |
I THINK IS A GOOD IDEA TO TAKE LOTTIE TO THE VET IF NOT DOING ANY BETTER. BUT HAVE YOU TRY FRONTLINE, OR K9 ADVANTIX? |
It is my understanding that new flea eggs will hatch every 3 weeks - so unless you successfully killed all the eggs (many products don't do this), you will see new ones continue to hatch. The fleas are ovbiously in your home which makes them very difficult to get rid of and may need a professional exterminator. All furniture needs to be treated as well as carpeting cause they lay eggs in all these areas. Gross, I know - but I hope this helps. |
the flea flogger by bob martin was meant to kill all the fleas in the home and keep it flea free for i think up to 3mths. I cleaned everything that could fit in the washing machine, and thought the flea flogger would deal with the things like carpets. I also have used the Johnsons spot on, twice in the last 2wks in keeping with the instructions. Im rather annoyed about the amount of money ive spent on flea products that apparently dont work! |
You could try Boric Acid sold in small bottles at the Pharmacy. My parents had to have their house professionally bombed for fleas and that is what the professional used to get rid of them. |
thanks for your help, she appears to be fine, no more fleas on her, no more scratching, so it mite just have been a left over ..i hope lol |

You sound like my neighbor. I use revolution once a month I get it for about $11 a tube Great deal & I have told them about it over & over. They dont want to order on line & wait for them to come in the mail. So they get ate up w/fleas, the pets suffer, they fill their home w/pesticides costing over $100 in one week, go back & spend another $100 the next week & still have fleas. We dont see a flea, maybe one kicking around taking its last breath. With frontline & revolution... any flea would rather be on a dog or cat then you. So you only have to treat the pets & when they hop on it will take care of the problem, give it a few days & they are all gone, no poisonous foggers needed. I do use granuals on my yard about $20 bucks, to kill fleas, mosquitoes, ticks etc in the yard, but nothing in my house. Most important thing is to remember do not bath 3 days before or after using topicals on your dog or it will not work, it has to be able to mix w/the oils in the skin. I rather have a slightly stinky flea free dog:p . So I put it on as soon as it comes in the mail & bath 3 days later if needed. I think 48 hours is ok but I wait 72 to be sure. OK so this is the cheapest easiest way to not be cursed w/fleas ever again. I suggest REVOLUTION (you can get 2 6pks a 12 month supply for around $100, thats less then $10 a month/just click on the link, find your size-I have ordered from these folks for years it is the real thing & works wonderfully) because it also takes care of earmites, heartworms, mange, maybe some other worms too.So you dont have to buy heartworm meds or fight mites either:) |

this is the first dog ive had to take care of myself and as i kno that pet stores sell stuff to rid your home and dog of fleas i went there and got what i needed. It appeared to work and then appeared not to, but Lottie isnt scratching now and ive seen no fleas on her now for a week and no "droppings" either so i think they are all gone. I will def get flea stuff from the vet in future, im not sure if i can get what you suggested in the uk |

Just be sure the animal has had a heartworm test before using revolution. It's a great product and we sell a lot of it, but the dog has to have a heartworm test unless it has been on heartworm preventative beforehand! Bobbie |
ahh right, well i havent found anywhere yet that sells it in the UK, but i have found a supplier of Frontline, is it any good? |
I use it on Shelby & Seymour and it works well on them ( actually I split a dose between them..... which the vet said was acceptable) No probs with fleas yet!!!! |
oh i think i shall try frontline then :) why do u split a dose, is it quite strong stuff? do u get it from the vet? |
Hi there, I use frontline with my Alfie and Lottie, we get it from the vet! They will sell you about 3 vials for about ?15 , you use it every 2 months or everymonth if there are a lot of ticks about in summer , so depending on where you stay in Scotland you might need to use it more. I use every 2 months then every month in summer, never touch wood had any fleas on any of them. It goes by the weight of your dog , I get the tiny dog one which says dogs up to 10 kg , vet says use a full ampolue on each of them I did that at first and the stuff nearly drowned them and made such a mess of their hair!!!So after taking to everyone here what I do is split the ampuole between the 2 of them . Hope this is of some help, there nothing worse than buying things and they dont work. Also have heard a product called Zodiac is good for your house. Good luck, pm if you want any more details.Plus your ok with heartworm we dont get that over here!! Julie |
